FBC-CS Worship: June 7th, 2026

Reflecting on the miracle at the wedding of Cana, the English poet, Alexander Pope, once wrote: β€œThe conscious water saw its master and blushed.” Maybe something similar happens to us when we become aware of God’s goodness, too. And, maybe, like that water turned to wine, we are to be a sign pointing back to the one who made us. Rev. Dan Schumacher preaches on John 2:1-11 as we continue our Summer Sermon Series, That You May Believe: The Gospel of John.

πŸ’ "Christianity does not look on this world as one which God very occasionally invades; it looks on it as a world from which God is never absent." β€” William Barclay

Read that again.

God is not only present in sanctuaries.

Not only present in worship services.

Not only present in the moments when life feels holy.

God is present in:
β˜• coffee with a friend
πŸš— school drop-offs
😭 grief
πŸ˜‚ laughter
πŸŒ… ordinary mornings

The question isn't whether God is here.

The question is whether we're paying attention.

❀️ What does God look like? ❀️

For many of us, we imagine God showing up in dramatic ways:

⚑ A flash of light.
🌩️ A booming voice.
✨ A miracle too obvious to miss.

But John tells a different story.

"The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood."

From the very beginning, the message God has been speaking is simple:

"I love you."

And then God decided not just to say it.

God decided to show it.

God's "I love you" became flesh as Jesus healed the sick, welcomed the forgotten, fed the hungry, forgave the broken, wept with the grieving, and shared meals with the lonely.

When God wanted to say:

πŸ’› This is who I am.
πŸ’› This is what I care about.
πŸ’› This is how I love.

He gave us Jesus.

Not power from a distance.

Not a voice from the clouds.

A person.

A neighbor.

A friend.

A Savior who stepped into the messiness of human life and loved people face-to-face.

Maybe that's still how God works.

Maybe God is found in the person who sits with us in our grief.
The friend who checks in.
The neighbor who lends a hand.
The church member who saves us a seat.
The stranger who reminds us we're not alone.

Because the Word is still becoming flesh.

And love is still moving into the neighborhood. πŸ’›

πŸ”΅ One of these things is not like the others.

That's how Pastor Dan describes the Gospel of John.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell the story of Jesus one way.

John tells it differently.

No parables.
No exorcisms.
No secret about who Jesus is.

Instead, Jesus boldly says:

✨ "I am the bread of life."
✨ "I am the light of the world."
✨ "I am the good shepherd."
✨ "I am the resurrection and the life."

Maybe that's why John's Gospel stays with us.

It doesn't just tell us what Jesus did.

It invites us to wrestle with who Jesus is.

This summer at FBC, we're exploring the Gospel that "is not like the others."

And perhaps that's exactly what makes it so unforgettable.

FBC-CS Worship: May 31st, 2026

In his commentary on The Gospel of John, William Barclay writes: "Christianity does not look on this world as one which God very occasionally invades; it looks on it as a world from which [God] is never absent.” But do we look in the right places? Or are we so used to seeing what we already expect that we’ve become blind to God’s presence in the world? Maybe Jesus can shine a little light on the situation for us. Rev. Dan Schumacher preaches on John 1:1-5, 10-14 as we begin our Summer Sermon Series on the Gospel of John.
