Another poem by Tom Shipp written during worship last Sunday, inspired by Rev. Lee Ann's sermon last week, "Lights, Camera, Action."

Seems life’s aperture is open
And the shutter speed is set
There’s no script and no rehearsal
What you see is what you get

But we emulate the movies
Act as though we play a part
Thinking life is really groovy
Every day a brand new start

But reality is brutal
Oft we fail to realize Things aren’t always as per usual
And we need to improvise

We can’t always be the hero
Sometimes not involved at all
In the plot there’s nothing for us
And we’ll get no curtain call

We can’t know what God is planning
What direction things might go
From the start clear through the ending
There are things we’ll never know

All we have is what life gives us
Look back on where we have been
Go about our business
Play out each and every scene

The incarnation – God in flesh - means that God does not stand above humanity. God enters it. And that means Jesus knew what it was to grow.

Honestly...that gives me hope. Because I don't need a Jesus who was never challenged. I don't need a Jesus who always said the right thing. I don't need a Jesus who never had anything new to learn.

I need a Jesus who shows me what growth looks like. I need a Jesus who can admit: "Gosh, I think I was wrong about you."

If Jesus could grow, maybe I can grow. If Jesus could listen, maybe I can listen. If Jesus could have his heart expanded...maybe mine can expand too.

I love this story because Jesus looks human. And a human Jesus gives me hope. A Jesus who listens. A Jesus who learns. A Jesus who changes. A Jesus who becomes more compassionate because someone was brave enough to tell him the truth. And he was brave enough to listen.

Our opening hymn was I love to tell the story. It’s a hymn I’ve known and loved all my life. To close my sermon today, I wrote a couple of my own verses inspired by this story. It’s not about the perfect Jesus, but rather the human Jesus.

“I love to tell the story when Jesus was a jerk,
When a woman had to show him that he needed to do some work.
I love a human Jesus, who can stumble, learn, and grow,
Who listens to the hurting then lets compassion flow.”

“A Savior who can change me because he changed as well,
A Christ who learned from others the love he came to tell.
If Jesus kept on growing, then maybe so can I;
And that is why I trust him, and that is why I try.”

(Chorus)
I love to tell the story; and when I am in glory,
I’ll tell the old, old story, of Jesus and his love.
