This weekend, we started our sermon series on Jesus’ Ministry by the Sea. We began in Luke 7:1-10 as we witnessed an example of the humble living Jesus calls us to through a highly esteemed centurion who sought Jesus’ healing of his servant. Rather than tout his status to Jesus, he humbles himself before him and recognizes Jesus as Lord. What are some ways in which we can strive to live humbly? Last week we wrapped up our Marching Orders series where we walked through Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain (Luke 6:20–49). In this section of scripture Jesus defined what it means to truly follow Him—not just in belief, but in obedience. By hearing and doing we are obedient to Christ, and witnesses to the world. Even when it puts us at odds with it. Walking by faith isn’t always easy—but it’s how a firm foundation is built and it’s the walk Jesus calls us to. How might our lives be different as a result?

Today as a nation we pause to reflect on the birthday of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior and his ideals and leadership in the struggle for equality, justice and civil rights. And this past weekend we also joined with others in reflecting on the sanctity of human life. Both of these causes are close to the heart of God. They both arise out of His call to honor the dignity of every life. That’s why, as a church, we’re glad to work closely with organizations here in our city like life Network and Crossfire Ministries. And globally, we’re collaborating with CURE, International. These are just a few of the wonderful, life-affirming ministries Woodmen partners with as we seek to treasure life at every stage.

We encouraged you to take a moment to read this prayer and bring it before the Lord and unite our hearts and our voices in prayer today!

Here’s a challenging truth from Jesus’ sermon on the plain (Luke 2:20-26): Universal approval might be a red flag! When we truly follow Christ - forgiving when others seek revenge, staying pure when others compromise, choosing integrity over popularity - we’ll inevitably face pushback. We don’t seek conflict, but we shouldn’t worry if our faith makes waves! As we start a new series entitled “Marching Orders”, we invite you to tag along as we seek to learn from the Story of Jesus as it is written in the account of the Gospel of Luke.

Listen or watch this past weekend’s sermon in the Woodmen App, YouTube OR the Woodmen Valley Chapel podcast.
