While on a trip to Ukraine last year to bring food and supplies to those affected by the war, i was able to hear the story of a family that had to suddenly leave their home in the middle of the night.
Around 10 pm, the husband rushed into the house and said to his wife. “Go get in the car with the kids. We are leaving. Something is not right.” Not knowing what was happening, but knowing that he was hearing from the Holy Spirit, the husband ran into the house to grab a few important documents, their passports and a few other items while the wife loaded up the car.
Within ten minutes of feeling that they needed to leave, they were in the car and driving away from their home and the city that they lived in.
Thirty minutes later, with tears streaming down their faces, they watched in the rear view mirror as their home city of Kyiv, Ukraine was being destroyed by bombs and missiles.
This has become reality for so many Ukrainians over the course of the last 18 months.
How could anything good be in this story?
I am reminded of a story in the Bible.
In the book of Matthew and the 2nd chapter, an angel visited Joseph and told him to take Jesus and Mary and flee to Egypt because Herrod would seek to kill Jesus.
What would have happened if they would have stayed there? Possibly the premature death of our savior?
Now I’m not saying that this husband and wife were the caretakers of a savior, but what i am saying is that God has a plan and a purpose for each indidvidual in that family. He cared so much about them that the Holy Spirit warned the husband of something that was about to happen.
Of course this could look like a very sad story; and in many ways it really is. However , when we take our eyes off of the negative in the situation and put or focus on the positive, we can see that if our ears are ready to hear, the Holy Spirit will always talk to us and show us what to do in every situation.
