Avoid slacktivism…simple words are not enough.
I have to be honest, though I understand the concept, I’d never heard this word prior to reading my devotion this morning. I’ve been guilty of this before, as slacktivism means to support something with little or no involvement or commitment.
Social media is a breeding ground for this concept to flourish. You can like, love, dislike, support, or any other clickable emotion and never have any skin in the game, and we feel better about ourselves for doing so. Words alone cannot help anyone when they are going through something, unless those words are part of a deliberate conversation with our living God, through His Son Jesus, who wants to be a part of our lives.
Paul taught all throughout the New Testament, that repentance of sin and faith in Christ is all you need to be saved. While this is true, James goes on to tell us that the faith we have is worthless, unless it brings about good works.
It can be hard for a new believer to understand, but the more we mature in our relationship of faith with Jesus of Nazareth, the more we align ourselves with Him, and in turn, we long to do work for His kingdom. This is a part of the spiritual maturation process, and is a natural result of spending more time with Him theoigh prayer and in God’s Word.
“How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. Rahab the pr******te is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” - James 2:20-26
“There is no place for slacktivism in the life of a follower of Jesus.”
Have a blessed day y’all!
