That’s Odd....
This past Sunday we started a new message series called “Uncommon Community”. It in we are exploring the ways that the truths of Jesus’ sermon on the Mount (which we unpacked in the previous message series) can be expressed in our every day lives.
On Sunday we said that following Jesus’ teachings should probably makes us seem a little odd or different from the world around us….odd in a good way. Being different isn’t just a matter of following a set of rules, it should flow from a genuine connection to Jesus…abiding in Him. At the same time, being different is more than just personal spirituality…it should effect our behavior!
In an effort to help each other maintain a balance between personal piety and outward behavior, we suggested an activity for this week called “2 x 4”.
Spend 2 hours with God this week:
- it does not need to be all at the same time.
- Find a place that is quiet and distraction free.
- Breathe and settle, then pray a short conversation to God
- Read a short passage of scripture (4-5 verses) maybe from the Psalms, our a devotional.
- Reflect on what you have read, is there something there that speaks to you today?
- Thank God for the blessings He has sent into your life, and for meeting with you today. Ask Him to go with you through the rest of your day.
Do 4 “peculiar” acts:
- do something that shows that you are not well adjusted to the way this world works
- Pay for the order behind you in the drive thru
- Let someone go ahead of you in line
- Take a friends car through the car wash
- Ask someone how they are doing, and listen thoughtfully to what they say
- Don’t force an interaction so it becomes awkward, just watch for a natural opportunity
Let us know how this exercise impacted you! Be sure to join us this Sunday for the next message in the Uncommon Community series!
