The story behind the presentation of the Dominican Monastery Belle doll at this year’s Women’s Morning of Spirituality:
WMOS team member, Monica Lapuente, has created Monastery Belle dolls since 2006. These dolls represent different orders of nuns and sisters. They are created from discarded dolls that Monica then hand sews habits for from remnant fabrics. To date she has made 417 Monastery Belle dolls. Some of the dolls are at St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, St. Mary’s school in Jackson, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Germantown, and for a time, some were displayed at Church of the Incarnation. Recently, Monica donated over 80 Monastery Belles to the Museum of Catholic Art and History in Columbus, Ohio.
Last Thursday, Monica Lapuente and fellow WMOS team member Provie Rose met after a prayer group they are both in. Since Provie knew that Monica has created many Monastery Belle dolls, Provie wanted to know if she had one dressed in the Dominican habit to give to our Witness Speaker, Sister Mary Lawrence who is a Dominican of St. Cecilia sister. Miraculously, Monica had a Dominican of St. Cecilia in the ORIGINAL habit (circa 1860) that she had already created in her China cabinet at home! The only part of the habit that has changed through the years is the veil. It was decided to present the Monastery Belle doll to sister after her talk. It was such a special moment!!!

• Witness Speaker
Our own Memphis-born Sister Mary Lawrence Wright, OP, who is the Principal at our outstanding St. Paul Catholic School is the Witness Speaker. She will talk about how God sees us and loves each of us deeply! “He who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” She will also share a little of her vocation story and how God overcomes our fears which gives us strength to say “Yes” to Him.

• Keynote Speaker
Claire Dwyer is the Keynote Speaker. She is a speaker, creative coach, and the author of the bestselling book, “This Present Paradise.” She will speak about St. Elizabeth of the Trinity with an emphasis on how to “Let Yourself Be Loved” and on how to give God your best “Yes” and protecting that “Yes” sometimes with a “No” to other things. We cannot do everything, so we all need to be able to let things drop for the sake of what one discerns is the most important “Yes” to God!
