The third and final week of our reading of the Psalms brings us to Psalms 101-150. As this book draws to a close, all people and all creation are called to praise the Lord. This final selection also contains Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the entire Bible. In it, the psalmist celebrates the beauty and wisdom of God's Word, reminding us that the Lord guides His people through His truth.
In these psalms, we encounter a rich tapestry of themes. We see heartfelt cries for justice and deliverance, like Psalm 109, alongside songs of praise and celebration, like Psalm 148. We encounter prayers of repentance and trust, like Psalm 130, as well as thanksgiving for God's protection, as in Psalm 121. Together, these chapters guide us through a full spectrum of life before God, which includes lament, hope, joy, and worship.
Throughout the Psalter, we also catch glimpses of the coming Messiah. In the prophetic Psalm 110, for example, David speaks of a victorious Priest-King who reigns over all enemies and intercedes for His people. Christ Himself will quote this psalm while the Pharisees test Him in Matthew 22:41-46. The New Testament identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of this mighty promised ruler. He is the King who reigns and the Priest whose work of redemption is complete.
As you read these final psalms, notice how the book moves steadily toward praise. Generation after generation, God's people have lifted their voices because of His faithfulness. May these songs lead us to treasure His Word and rejoice in right worship of the Redeemer who fulfills every promise. Next week, we will continue our year-long study with the book of Proverbs!
