Simul iustus et peccator is a Latin phrase meaning simultaneously righteous and sinner. This is the tension we feel and the truth Easter answers.
Long ago, God spoke through the prophets in many ways, but now, as Hebrews 1:1–2 reminds us, He has spoken to us by His Son. As Martin Luther said, “If the word of the prophets is accepted, how much more ought we to seize the gospel of Christ, since it is not a prophet speaking to us, but the Lord of the prophets; not a servant, but a Son; not an angel, but God.”
This is our hope! Though we are still sinners, Christ has spoken the final word. Though we are broken, He has made us righteous. Though we deserve death, He has risen. Because the Son has come, because He has died and risen again, we are justified by faith and held fast by grace.
He is risen. And in Him, so are we. Happy Easter!
