This week’s Oneg highlights Susan Barzelay, a founding member of CBI for more than 20 years.

Susan helped establish our Sisterhood, served as Sisterhood President, and continues to share her time and talents with CBI.

Susan dedicates this oneg to her mother, who inspired her love of the arts and humanitarian causes and enjoyed CBI’s Hanukkah celebrations and friendships during her later years in Texas.

Thank you, Susan, for hosting. May this oneg nourish those who prepare and enjoy it, and may those joining virtually feel connected to our community.

When someone tells you to take a hike, sometimes you should listen!

This Saturday, we took Shabbat outdoors for a “sh’hike!” With Rabbi Cantor Judy’s specially designed wearable prayer books, and a mini Eitz Chaim, we enjoyed a walking Shabbat service, finding moments for prayer, connection, quiet reflection and fun along the way.

We left with a sense of peace and comfort—and a deeper appreciation for the beauty around us. What a lovely way to slow down, breathe, and welcome the gifts of Shabbat.

This is the first in our series highlighting a mitzvah shared by our congregants: hosting an oneg. Oneg means “delight.” After many of our services we have a gathering where we share food, conversation, and the joy of Shabbat. This Friday, Jennifer and Shane are hosting in loving memory of Jennifer’s grandmother and uncle.

Jennifer and Shane’s care for CBI reaches far beyond this evening. From leading Religious Practices to serving as Sisterhood president to providing technology support wherever it’s needed, they give their time and talents to so many parts of congregational life. We’re grateful for all they do to keep our community connected.

May this food and the mitzvah of sharing it nourish those who enjoy it and those whose hands prepared it. For those joining us virtually or seeing this post, may you feel the warmth of our community and know you have a place at our table. May the memories of Jennifer’s grandmother and uncle be a blessing.

On October 7, we pause as a CBI community to remember the terror of the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel-the lives taken, the families torn apart, and the trauma carried by survivors, those taken hostage, and their loved ones. May the memories of those we lost be a blessing.

We also reflect on the troubling rise in antisemitism since that day and the fear it has brought to Jewish communities around the world. We stand together in our Jewish identity, committed to confronting hatred and helping our children grow with pride, connection, and hope.

We pray for healing for wounded bodies and hearts, comfort for those who grieve, and calm in a world weary of violence. May all who live in fear find safety, and may all who work toward peace find strength.

We offer these words of Oseh Shalom, including a prayer for all who inhabit the earth:

What a joyful way to cap off our High Holy Day season at CBI!

For Simchat Torah, we unrolled the entire Torah together, seeing the stories that connect generations stretch out before us. As we finished the annual reading cycle and returned to Beresh*t, the beginning. We also celebrated a beautiful new beginning: the consecration of our newest Torah learners.

Welcoming these children into a lifetime of Jewish learning reminds us that our Torah’s story continues through each new generation.

After a season of reflection, renewal, and gathering together, we carry this joy forward. May our newest learners always find belonging in our community, wonder in our traditions, and their own meaningful connection to Torah.

As Shabbat arrives, we hold so much in our hearts.

We have found joy in our sukkah—sharing meals, music, laughter, and time together. We have also heard from people facing challenging moments, reaching out for blessings, prayers, and the comfort of knowing their community is beside them. And with the news of those brought to safety aboard the flight headed to Israel, we have felt the wonder of miracles and deep gratitude for lives saved.

Joy, worry, hope, and gratitude can all sit beside one another. There is room for all of it beneath the sukkah’s branches and within our community.

Tonight, may we give thanks for our blessings and hold close those who need strength. May we keep reaching out, checking in, and showing up for one another. And may our youth continue to carry the love of Torah into the next generation.

Shabbat Shalom from Congregation Beth Israel. May this Shabbat bring peace, comfort, and moments of joy.

One last look back at Sukkot before we roll the Torah back to the beginning!

Our sukkah brought us together in so many ways, including time for our Sisterhood to gather and our Chai Notes to lend their voices. We also had the chance to celebrate in the sukkah with some of the people who help keep our community safe. Many thanks to our off-duty police officers, whose care and presence allow us to gather, pray, and celebrate together.

Now we turn toward Simchat Torah, celebrating the completion of our annual Torah reading and beginning again with Beresh*t. At CBI, we also celebrate the consecration of our newest Religious School students, welcoming them into a lifetime of learning, questioning, and finding their own connection to Torah.

As we roll the Torah back to the beginning, may we all carry forward what we have learned, let go of what we no longer need, and make room for a fresh start. The stories begin again—and we meet them with another year of life behind us and new possibilities ahead.

We are so grateful to G-d for protecting the passengers and crew aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, headed from Dubai to Tel Aviv. We give thanks for the courage of those who helped bring the plane to safety. We pray especially for a full and speedy recovery for Captain Smit Machchhar, the injured pilot whose bravery helped save those aboard, and for comfort for all who experienced this terrifying ordeal.

In Jewish tradition, someone who survives a life-threatening situation offers Birkat HaGomel—a blessing of thanksgiving. As a community, we join in gratitude for these precious lives saved.

The votes are in, the meats have been eaten, and this year’s highly contested (and wonderfully raucous) Brotherhood Brisket Cookoff in the sukkah has two winners: Howard & Ari are the new Smoked Brisket champion and Steven is the winner of the Non-smoked Brisket category.

There’s something special about this time of year: gathering in the sukkah, sharing a meal, and celebrating the friendships that make Brotherhood what it is.

Thank you to everyone who cooked, tasted, cheered, and made it such a fun evening.

The Torah tells us to dwell in the sukkah during Sukkot, remembering the shelters our ancestors lived in after leaving Egypt. It also tells us to rejoice in the festival together, with the people in our community. This weekend, we did just that.

At our nearly sold out gathering, we tasted and learned about wines from Israel, bought a few favorites, and donated bottles for Casino Night. We shared an insightful Havdalah, made connections with friends from other faith communities, ate Italian food, and got surprisingly competitive over Sukkot trivia. Mostly, we had a wonderful time together.

This is one way Torah stays alive at CBI: we gather, learn, welcome people in, and enjoy being together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped support our community.
