Collegeville Institute

Collegeville Institute The Collegeville Institute is a place of scholarship, worship, dialogue, and community immersed in the Benedictine rhythm of work and prayer.

The Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research brings together well-trained scholars, researchers, writers and other creative, articulate women and men who seek a place for careful thought, inquiry, and prayer. We seek to discern the meaning of Christian identity and unity in a religiously and culturally diverse world, and to communicate that meaning for the work of the church and the renewal of human community.

We’re thankful to have spent the past few days at St. Francis Springs Prayer Center in Stoneville, North Carolina, for Writing in the Wilderness: Reflecting on the Immigration Stories That Have Shaped Our Lives, a workshop led by Isaac Villegas.

Throughout the workshop, participants honored the complexity of their stories and reflected on how movement across borders, cultures, generations, and histories shapes who we are and the communities we are building.

We are grateful to Isaac Villegas, St. Francis Springs Prayer Center, and each participant who brought their presence, attention, and courage to this meaningful time together.

Last week in Asheville, North Carolina, nine poets gathered for Out of the depths: writing prayer: a poetry workshop led by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Marie Howe.

Hosted in partnership with Trinity Episcopal Church, the workshop invited participants to explore the meeting place between poetry and prayer: the words we reach for when we praise, plead, question, listen, grieve, give thanks, and approach the divine.

The week also included a public reading and conversation with Marie Howe and Bruce Beasley, creating space for reflection, shared language, and the deep attention that poetry makes possible.

We are grateful to Marie Howe, Bruce Beasley, Trinity Episcopal Church, and each of the poets who entered this week with openness, courage, and care.

At the Collegeville Institute, we believe writing can help us speak more truthfully about ordinary human life, spiritual longing, and the mystery that meets us there.

Closing out the 2025-2026 year, our Resident Scholars came together for one final meal. Celebrating the end of another incredible academic year in the Butler Center!

This year’s group brought together an eclectic mix of thinkers and creators: ministers, scholars, writers, artists, and community leaders. Throughout the year, they dug into meaningful conversations, prepared meals side by side, shared music and teaching, and wove together relationships shaped by curiosity, openness, and mutual support.

We’re grateful for the wisdom they carried, the creativity they offered, and the community they nurtured.

That’s a wrap on Writing in the Wilderness! A successful week at the Redemptorist Renewal Retreat Center with Isaac Villegas. In this workshop, participants considered the people and places that have shaped their identities—the memories we carry with us, helping us remember who we are.

Blessed to have Isaac Villegas grace us with such a wonderful experience.
