St. Patrick's Faith Formation St. Patrick's Colesburg Faith Formation History of St. Patrick’s Parish

The Most Reverend Mathias Loras, D. D. purchased land for a church in Colesburg in 1854.

The church was named Saint Patrick’s because many settlers were of Irish descent. The cemetery was donated by John McMahon, probably in 1857 as the oldest tombstone bears that date. The first church was built in 1862 and was replaced in 1877. The church burned in 1940, and the present church was rebuilt on the same site. In 1930, the church’s two adjoining lots were purchased and the present recto

ry was built. Patrick’s was first directed by Father Michael Lynch in 1862. Along with different pastors from Holy Cross and Garber, St. Patrick’s has been served by: John Theobald, John Mayer, Joseph Bohr, Charles Steinlage, Herbert Krieger, Wilbur Ziegler, Conrad Schallau, Richard Maichen, Gregory Einck, Clarence Friedman, Reynold Sigwarth, John Ptacek, John Friederick (1989-2006), Robert Davies (2006-2008) , Stephen Lundgren (2008-2015), and presently John Haugen. In the summer of 1991, St. Patrick’s parish of Colesburg and St. Mark’s parish of Edgewood linked together. Patrick’s Religious Education program continues to grow and thrive today because of parishioner involvement with our Board of Education, Parish Council, and various committee efforts. Patrick’s families continue to worship, pray, and wish for the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. We continue to pray for each other and for the church of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. We also say special prayers for Religious Vocations to the Priesthood in our Archdiocese.
