Reconstructing Judaism (and a number of RJ congregations) are among the more than five dozen local and national Jewish groups sponsoring ICE Out!: National Day of Action, this Thursday, April 30th. Why this date?

Friday is May 1st, May Day, and unions and other groups are planning over 3,000 actions. Perhaps Jewish organizations wanted to avoid the approaching Shabbat, making it easier for Jews to make our/their presence and perspective known.

This week is quite appropriate for these protests. The penultimate verse in this week's Torah portion is:
מִשְׁפַּ֤ט אֶחָד֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֔ם כַּגֵּ֥ר כָּאֶזְרָ֖ח יִהְיֶ֑ה כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃
You shall have one law for stranger and citizen alike: for I the ETERNAL am your God.

Jewish tradition demands we stand up for those who are vulnerable.

We are proud to support and 's National Day of Action for on Thursday, April 30. Jews of conscience will gather in cities across the country, unified in one simple message: ICE’s cruelty must stop and corporations must stop being complicit.

It is a national day of mourning. Due to the size of the country, national conscription, and Israel's history, nearly every Israeli has a family member, friend, or colleague who perished in a war.

HIAS, formerly the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, helped many of our families come to and settle in this country, including my wife's. Last week, they published this video statement: "In every generation, the Jewish soul is marked by the memory of migration."
