What do we celebrate this week?
Some find it uncomfortable that we celebrate the death of an innocent Person.
We celebrate the shedding of His blood.
We celebrate the fact that His body was broken.
We celebrate that as He died, God the Father forsook Him.
We don’t celebrate this because we love violence and death, but because we hate them.
Violence and death came into the world as a result of sin, the sin of humanity.
Jesus came into this world to die a violent death in order to ultimately heal humanity from sin, violence and death.
As He died, He bore the punishment for our sins so that we could be forgiven.
By the shedding of His blood and by the breaking of His body we can be healed.
To receive this healing, the Bible tells us that two things are necessary, the grace that Jesus provided on the cross and faith in God and His Son.
Christians rejoice because we have received that healing in our soul as a result of this gift of grace received through faith.
Some will say, “But Christians aren’t perfect. They still sin and they can still hurt others.”
This is partly why the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is so important.
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ informs us that God has victory over sin and death.
One day, Christians will be resurrected, just as Christ was, and we will live with Him in a perfected world where sin and death no longer exist.
In that day, our healing will be completed both spiritually and physically.
Why do we celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus?
Because without those things, we would have no eternal hope.
But because He came, and because He accomplished those things, we have the promise and believing hope of eternal life with God in Christ.
