I was blessed to know Rabbi Philip Lazowski, and even more blessed to call him my rabbi.

As a teenager, I never heard him focus on the horrors he endured. Instead, he spoke of the people who saved him, of kindness, courage, and the light that can shine even in the darkest moments. He taught us that while evil exists, goodness and humanity endure.

Rabbi Lazowski officiated my Bat Mitzvah, gave me my Hebrew name, and as that special day approached, he entrusted me with helping to lead Friday night services for several weeks. He made me feel seen, valued, and connected to our traditions. He cared deeply for my entire family, embracing us with love and compassion, even though my father was not Jewish.

Rabbi Lazowski taught generations not simply how to remember the Holocaust, but how to live—with faith, compassion, forgiveness, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of people.

His voice, his wisdom, and his example remain among the greatest gifts of my youth. I was blessed to know him, and blessed to call him my rabbi.
