Sermon Title & Theme: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem”
Sunday, March 16
Second Congregational Church of Cohasset
In our Lenten Gospel stories, Jesus is ever foreshadowing
his own suffering and death. This week, Jesus speaks of
his suffering - this “work he has yet to finish” – against the
backdrop of Jerusalem and its Temple. He alludes to
greater violence still to come: his own crucifixion, yes, but
also to the first Christian martyrs who will be put to death
and, then too, to the Temple and city that will be destroyed
by Roman power. How might we understand Jesus’s
story in light of the actual events that befell these holy
places? What sense do we find in words about these
foreign (to us!) places, Jerusalem and its Temple?
Jesus’s words – like his suffering and passion – invite us,
always, to find in Jesus’s experience our own: the places
to which we feel disconnected, the people we love who
are hurting, our own deepest wounds that are in need of
healing. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem.” Come and open your
own heart to hear what you need to hear.
