SPURGEON’S REFLECTIONS on PSALM 12
A man fares better among lions than among liars
When godliness goes, faithfulness inevitably follows
Flattery is the sign of the tavern where duplicity is the host
Free thinkers are generally very free-talkers
Strange is it that the easy yoke of the Lord should so irritate the shoulders of the proud, while the iron bands of Satan they bind about themselves as chains of honor.
Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.
Man’s words are ‘yes and no’, but God’s words are ‘Yes and Amen!’
When those in power are vile, their followers will be no better
The Bible has passed through the furnace of persecution, literary criticism, philosophic doubt, and scientific discovery, and has lost nothing but those human interpretations which cling to it as alloy to precious ore. The experience of saints has tried it in every conceivable manner, but not a single doctrine or promise has been consumed in the most excessive heat.

PSALM 150
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!

“Your life may resemble the psalter with its varying moods, its light and shadow, its sob and smile; but it will end with hallelujahs, if only you will keep true to the will and way and work of the Most Holy.” (Meyer)

"The soul full of joy takes a still higher step when it clothes itself with praise. Such a heart takes to itself no glory, for it is dressed in gratitude and so hides itself. Nothing is seen of the flesh and its self-exaltation, since the garment of praise hides the pride of man." (Spurgeon)

MEGAN - After all the prayers, questions, lamentations, confessions, and celebrations throughout the Psalms, the final call is for every living creature to join in praising the Lord. Our purpose is to praise, directing our attention away from ourselves and toward God's greatness. Whatever seasons of joy or sorrow have marked our journey, the fitting response is worship! Praise is not reserved for a select few but is the privilege and calling of ALL who have breath. God's glory and goodness are worthy of endless praise!

MATTHEW 16
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

CARLYN - Such simple instructions, yet the task is not easy. Humility is the heart posture we must have.

Lord, search us and rid us of the pride we have in our lives. Reveal the pride, so that we can repent and turn from our evil ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.

JUDGES 9
56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers.

CARLYN - God is just. He will always bring about perfect justice, whether in this life or on Judgment Day. Though Abimelech committed great evil, God did not overlook his sin. In His perfect timing, He addressed it.

As I have grown in my understanding of God’s justice over the past few months, I have been continually encouraged by the truth that He knows best and judges perfectly. Recognizing that we, too, are sinners deserving of eternal punishment only magnifies the beauty of His mercy and grace. Because of Christ, we do not have to fear what is to come. Instead, we can be washed clean—white as snow. The very things that once were scary, such as Judgment Day, become something to anticipate. We can eagerly look forward to it, knowing we will stand before our Savior redeemed and made new. when you don’t need Him. Be thankful in all things.

PSALM 149
Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,And a two-edged sword in their hand,

DAN - Continued prayers for ISRAEL. Praying for safety, security, and shalom … but more importantly that God would breath His spirit into their hearts and bring them to the knowledge of Yeshua.

Comments by TROY ANDERSON

MATTHEW 15
8 ‘This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far away from Me.9 And in vain do they worship Me,Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

TROY – Jesus is not fooled by lip service nor is He susceptible to our flattery. We may be able to fake it with people but He sees right to the heart. I do not want to be empty words but I know I need His help to stay faithful and true to Him. I am thankful that He picks me up when I stumble and He is quick to forgive when I humble myself to ask. We aren’t perfect but do not be a hypocrite.

JUDGES 8
34 So the sons of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, who had saved them from the hands of all their enemies on every side; 35 nor did they show kindness to the household of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in accordance with all the good that he had done for Israel.

TROY – The cycle continues. Beware that you do not repeat this cycle of turn your back on God until things are bad. Seek God for deliverance just to reject God again when you don’t need Him. Be thankful in all things.

PSALM 148
[v.14] – And He has raised up for His people a horn, the praise of all His faithful servants, of Israel, the people close to his heart. Praise the LORD.

JOHN – The entirety of this Psalm is simply praise within praise! A picture of Creation’s compelling desire to respond with continual and unified worship. A special form of worship that includes an intrinsic form of joyful submission only worthy of our Creator, our Messiah, and our Savior God. Praise to the King of kings…!

Comments by ERIC & TRICIA GEERDES

MATTHEW 14
22-23 "Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there."

ERIC - It was a long day of ministering to the multitudes. Imagine how Jesus and his disciples were very tired, but He was about to continue teaching them about faith--in spite of being exhausted. Do you find that when you're tired or worn out that is when your faith is weakest? Do you get short with others, and generally have a poor attitude? That is true for me, and prayer helps in those times. Lord, help us grow in faith and love in the margin of our day when we are physically and/or mentally toast! Amen!

24-31 (NLT) "Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it is really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”

TRICIA - This is a favorite, well-known portion of scripture that is so practical for us in our faith journeys. First of all, I commend Peter for thinking he could walk on water in the first place! That took a lot of faith! I know that for me, I can start out with great faith and enthusiasm for something, but when things get uncomfortable or scary, it’s easy to doubt. I love that Jesus immediately reached out and saved Peter. He is faithful even when our hearts are fickle. Thank you Lord, for your faithfulness to me!

JUDGES 7
2 "And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’”

TRICIA - God knew that unless the odds were so bad, Israel would be likely take credit for the victory. It is my prayer that today, with the current conflict with Iraq, that Israel would give God all of the credit for whatever success and protection they have received.

9-11 “It happened on the same night that the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp.”

ERIC - When the Lord guides us in important decisions, we can be confident that He knows the fears and concerns rolling around in our minds! Gideon was indeed afraid—rightly so with 300 men versus 135,000 (a 450:1 ratio). Have you found times that the Lord gave you a peek into what was coming in order to strengthen your resolve to follow His leading? It is awesome when He does!

Comments by TOD HORNBY

PSALM 147
1 Praise the Lord!
How good to sing praises to our God!
How delightful and how fitting!
2 The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem
and bringing the exiles back to Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted
and bandages their wounds.
4 He counts the stars
and calls them all by name.
5 How great is our Lord! His power is absolute!
His understanding is beyond comprehension!

TOD - He is WORTHY of our PRAISE!

This Psalm reminds me of one of my favorite songs, Indescribable, sung by Chris Tomlin and written by Laura Story.

Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
You are amazing, God

I think I'll go fire up the old CD player and put it on to worship now!

JUDGES 6
13 And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

ANDREW - I love the story of Gideon – there is much wisdom to be gained from him. First, we’ve all been where Gideon is; we’ve all said, “God, why are you allowing certain things in our lives or in our family or in our world….where are the wonderful promises that we’ve read about?”….yet we often don’t recognize that God allows things to happen to us in order to correct us, get our attention, and turn us in a better direction.

15-16 And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

ANDREW - I love how God called to Gideon – O mighty man of valor. Gideon certainly didn’t feel like he was anything special, in fact, he was beating wheat in a winepress, indicating his fear of the Midianites. But God does not see how we see. God sees us through His strength, not through our weakness(es). We need to try to see ourselves and others through His lens. It will change how we behave and it will change how we value others, even those with whom we disagree.

25-26 That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father's bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order.

ANDREW - Before we can be all who God created us to be, we must purge that which is evil, distracting, and blasphemous from our lives and our homes.

39-40 Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

ANDREW - Even after the interactions that Gideon had with the Lord, he still doubted. God knows it’s often easier for us to doubt then to trust, but at least Gideon voiced his doubt to God and asked God to help him overcome his doubt. I wonder if Gideon secretly hoped that the fleece trick wouldn’t work. It’s weird to think that he might actually have been relieved that he didn’t have to do what God wanted Him to do rather than know that he was interacting with the God of heaven. We will have many doubts, but willing ourselves to “just trust” or “just believe” isn’t always enough. There are times when, like Gideon, we need to be honest with God and set out our fleece. I have done this many times in my life and although God showed what I asked Him to show, it didn’t always result in what I wanted to hear, yet every time I’ve been disappointed in the moment (probably like Gideon not being able to avoid leading a military campaign) when I look back I am very thankful that God spoke and I submitted.

MATTHEW 13
11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. “

ANDREW - For Believers, the Holy Spirit illuminates and clarifies scripture. For those who are lost, it seems foolish, crazy, and made up by a bunch of weirdos. We can’t be arrogant about that with which we were entrusted. Rather, this should humble us so that we have a deep concern and love for those who cannot grasp God’s Truth.

PSALM 146
Do not put your trust in princes,
Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

DAN - Seems to me that there is a political thread that is running through all our chapters today! Make sure you read them all and know that the above verse is TRUE!

Since we are leaving for Israel soon many people are asking me: “What’s going on?” My Answer … “ONLY GOD KNOWS and maybe Trump to a much lessor degree!

Believers … time to lean in to the Lord!

JUDGES 5
Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying:

2 “When leaders lead in Israel,
When the people willingly offer themselves,
Bless the Lord!

DAN - What a timely word for both the US and Israel!

MATTHEW 12
25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

DAN - I believe this is a warning to the US! The Democratic - Republican rift seems unbridgeable at this time. If things don’t change this teaching WILL come to pass!
