HGE MORNING PSALMS
Comments by TOD HORNBY
PSALM 147
1 Praise the Lord!
How good to sing praises to our God!
How delightful and how fitting!
2 The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem
and bringing the exiles back to Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted
and bandages their wounds.
4 He counts the stars
and calls them all by name.
5 How great is our Lord! His power is absolute!
His understanding is beyond comprehension!
TOD - He is WORTHY of our PRAISE!
This Psalm reminds me of one of my favorite songs, Indescribable, sung by Chris Tomlin and written by Laura Story.
Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
You are amazing, God
I think I'll go fire up the old CD player and put it on to worship now!

JUDGES 6
13 And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
ANDREW - I love the story of Gideon – there is much wisdom to be gained from him. First, we’ve all been where Gideon is; we’ve all said, “God, why are you allowing certain things in our lives or in our family or in our world….where are the wonderful promises that we’ve read about?”….yet we often don’t recognize that God allows things to happen to us in order to correct us, get our attention, and turn us in a better direction.
15-16 And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
ANDREW - I love how God called to Gideon – O mighty man of valor. Gideon certainly didn’t feel like he was anything special, in fact, he was beating wheat in a winepress, indicating his fear of the Midianites. But God does not see how we see. God sees us through His strength, not through our weakness(es). We need to try to see ourselves and others through His lens. It will change how we behave and it will change how we value others, even those with whom we disagree.
25-26 That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father's bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order.
ANDREW - Before we can be all who God created us to be, we must purge that which is evil, distracting, and blasphemous from our lives and our homes.
39-40 Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.
ANDREW - Even after the interactions that Gideon had with the Lord, he still doubted. God knows it’s often easier for us to doubt then to trust, but at least Gideon voiced his doubt to God and asked God to help him overcome his doubt. I wonder if Gideon secretly hoped that the fleece trick wouldn’t work. It’s weird to think that he might actually have been relieved that he didn’t have to do what God wanted Him to do rather than know that he was interacting with the God of heaven. We will have many doubts, but willing ourselves to “just trust” or “just believe” isn’t always enough. There are times when, like Gideon, we need to be honest with God and set out our fleece. I have done this many times in my life and although God showed what I asked Him to show, it didn’t always result in what I wanted to hear, yet every time I’ve been disappointed in the moment (probably like Gideon not being able to avoid leading a military campaign) when I look back I am very thankful that God spoke and I submitted.
MATTHEW 13
11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. “
ANDREW - For Believers, the Holy Spirit illuminates and clarifies scripture. For those who are lost, it seems foolish, crazy, and made up by a bunch of weirdos. We can’t be arrogant about that with which we were entrusted. Rather, this should humble us so that we have a deep concern and love for those who cannot grasp God’s Truth.
