Maps. Memory. Hunches. Feelings in our gut. Directions from random stranger at a gas station. All things which set people down a certain path.

𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙂𝙤𝙙? God 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 what is ahead. He sees the entire road. Not just the obstacle 100 feet ahead. God sees the whole road. From the starting point until the 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

Sometimes God takes us on a detour for a reason: the detour shapes our lives. God may be developing you, while he is preparing you for your destiny. Or maybe he is using your detour to prepare others, too.

𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙢. Not the directions. Trust in Him with all of your heart.

Trust is more than a feeling. Trust without action is nothing. Trusting means obeying when you doubt, continuing when you are exhausted, and following when you feel like you are walking in a circle.

God has a roadmap for you: 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘏𝘪𝘮?

Lɪꜰᴇ ɪs ᴀ sᴇʀɪᴇs ᴏꜰ “ᴜᴘs” ᴀɴᴅ “ᴅᴏᴡɴs.”

The lost job. A broken heart. Death. Hard times.

We all go through things. Being followers of Christ doesn’t change this. You will still experience pain and suffering.

𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒚 𝒊𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.

Believing in Christ doesn’t mean you won’t go through valleys — it means 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. God is with you.

The valley isn’t your destination. You aren’t meant to stop and setup residence there. It’s just a place you are passing through on your way.

We are all sinners.

Some of us are asked to work in the vineyard and say “No, we have other things to do today.” We blow it off for something we want to do. Later in the day we may feel bad and go to work.

Some of us are asked to work in the vineyard and say “Yes!” and never go to the vineyard. But we are very respectful and talk a good game — even if we have no intention of actually going.

Which is better? Someone who says no, changes their mind, and goes to work or the one who says all the right things but doesn’t go to work?

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜.

What does it mean to “love like Jesus?”

It means to love one another, as Jesus commanded, like Jesus loved us. To personify God’s unconditional love for us.

Jesus came into a world that chose to love darkness and sin. The world rejected Him. But the world did not affect Him.

𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. And we are called to affect the world the same way — through showing we are Christians by displaying unconditional love for others.

There is no single agreed on definition of what a “Christian” really is. We all have our ideas of what makes a “Christian” and some them are wildly different.

Take time this week to examine what makes you a Christian. How do you know you are one?

He created the universe from scratch. Nothing exists without Him.

We couldn’t begin to imagine the vastness of God. It is beyond our comprehension. So, ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝐺𝑜𝑑?

Because, God made a way.

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD.” Jeremiah 24:7

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮. He knows everything about you. From the number of hairs on your head to whether you actually ate your broccoli.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐢𝐦. It isn’t enough to have a heart to know Him. God reveals Himself to us.

If you asked someone “What is God like?” you might get answers like

Love
Holy
Righteous
Eternal
Omnipotent
Omnipresent
Omniscient
Sovereign
Creator of All

And all of these things describe God. But none of them 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 describe God.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴.

There are over a hundred of characteristics of God we could sit down an identify. And while each of them alone may describe a characteristic of God, they do not fully encapsulate what God is really like.

In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus teaches us God is a loving Father who accepts his wayward children back, despite our rebellion. He loves the faithful and rebellious, equally.

What is God really like? 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙃𝙞𝙢.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus may not have been speaking particularly about a church in Cochran, Georgia, some 2,000 years after he made this statement to his Disciples. Yet, here we are knowing the truth:

𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹.

Today we bless the backpacks of the children of our congregation and pray over them as well as all the teachers and staff. As they begin going back to school, may they never forget 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 and He is with them always.

You may find yourself pondering — what does God want from me?

It may seem like a difficult question to wrestle with. But really, it is quite simple:

𝘼𝙘𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙮.
𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙮.
𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙮.

That is what God wants from you. Not empty words. Not platitudes. He doesn’t have a burdensome list of tasks.

He wants action. He wants you to act justly. To forgive others completely. To walk humbly 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗶𝗺.

Nabal was a wealthy and wicked man. King Saul wanted David dead. His army was out looking for David and his men.

David sought out help from Nabal. David and his men had previously protected Nabal’s flocks of sheep. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘕𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘋𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘥’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵.

His response didn’t thrill David and his men. In response they began 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹’𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱.

Enter Abigail, Nabal’s wife. Some of his servants alerted Abigail about what Nabal had done and what David was planning to do. So, she intervened and made an offering to David and took the blame of her husband — urging him to not sully his future with the needless bloodshed.

Abigail prevented the bloodshed with her wisdom. When she told her recently sobered husband, Nabal, what she did — his heart failed him and he died.

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞. But the bloodshed would have led David to sin. David’s reaction to Nabal’s reply would have been a poor decision.

𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨.
