There is no single agreed on definition of what a “Christian” really is. We all have our ideas of what makes a “Christian” and some them are wildly different.

Take time this week to examine what makes you a Christian. How do you know you are one?

He created the universe from scratch. Nothing exists without Him.

We couldn’t begin to imagine the vastness of God. It is beyond our comprehension. So, ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝐺𝑜𝑑?

Because, God made a way.

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD.” Jeremiah 24:7

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮. He knows everything about you. From the number of hairs on your head to whether you actually ate your broccoli.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐢𝐦. It isn’t enough to have a heart to know Him. God reveals Himself to us.

What can you do to know God?

If you asked someone “What is God like?” you might get answers like

Love
Holy
Righteous
Eternal
Omnipotent
Omnipresent
Omniscient
Sovereign
Creator of All

And all of these things describe God. But none of them 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 describe God.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴.

There are over a hundred of characteristics of God we could sit down an identify. And while each of them alone may describe a characteristic of God, they do not fully encapsulate what God is really like.

In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus teaches us God is a loving Father who accepts his wayward children back, despite our rebellion. He loves the faithful and rebellious, equally.

What is God really like? 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙃𝙞𝙢.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus may not have been speaking particularly about a church in Cochran, Georgia, some 2,000 years after he made this statement to his Disciples. Yet, here we are knowing the truth:

𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹.

Today we bless the backpacks of the children of our congregation and pray over them as well as all the teachers and staff. As they begin going back to school, may they never forget 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 and He is with them always.

You may find yourself pondering — what does God want from me?

It may seem like a difficult question to wrestle with. But really, it is quite simple:

𝘼𝙘𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙮.
𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙮.
𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙮.

That is what God wants from you. Not empty words. Not platitudes. He doesn’t have a burdensome list of tasks.

He wants action. He wants you to act justly. To forgive others completely. To walk humbly 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗶𝗺.

Nabal was a wealthy and wicked man. King Saul wanted David dead. His army was out looking for David and his men.

David sought out help from Nabal. David and his men had previously protected Nabal’s flocks of sheep. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘕𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘋𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘥’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵.

His response didn’t thrill David and his men. In response they began 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹’𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱.

Enter Abigail, Nabal’s wife. Some of his servants alerted Abigail about what Nabal had done and what David was planning to do. So, she intervened and made an offering to David and took the blame of her husband — urging him to not sully his future with the needless bloodshed.

Abigail prevented the bloodshed with her wisdom. When she told her recently sobered husband, Nabal, what she did — his heart failed him and he died.

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞. But the bloodshed would have led David to sin. David’s reaction to Nabal’s reply would have been a poor decision.

𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨.

1 John 2:15-17 tells us the things of this world, which may seem important now, 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙞𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢.

True freedom is freedom from the bo***ge of sin and fear. Without it, we are all slaves to sin.

But how does one get true freedom❓

You just ask for it! You ask for forgiveness and invite Jesus into your heart. Because 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞.

If you are a newer Christian, 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝!

Know your sins have been forgiven and you are in a love relationship with the Father. You don’t deserve this, but it has been given to you by grace through faith.

If you are a mature Christian, 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝!

The Lord has brought you through so much in overcoming evil and strengthening you through you abiding in His word.

If you are an elder Christian, 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝!

You have helped the church continue and have helped develop other Christians through your abiding relationship with Christ.

Whatever stage of life you find yourself at, whatever generation of believer you are, 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 by the Lord and in His great, great love for you.

Today we celebrated our recent graduates as they go forth!

This can be a tumultuous time in someone’s life — years of instruction culminating with a celebration. Change. Growing up. A new found freedom.

But then you face a tough question: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩?

The Disciples faced the same question after the first Easter. Christ died. Christ was resurrected. He ascended to Heaven. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤?

The answer came 50 days after Easter Sunday: the day of a Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came down from Heaven, filled the room, and was poured out on all those who traveled to Jerusalem and were waiting for 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵.

It was on the day of Pentecost that the church was born. The day Disciples began to “get it.”

It was transformative for them. And because of it, the Christian Church began to grow.
