Spurgeon: On the local Christian Church

The presence of Jesus is the fixed center of the assembly, the warrant for our coming together, and the power with which it acts. The church, however small, is gathered in His name. Jesus arrives first: "I am there in the midst of them." We are gathered together by the holy impulses of Christian brotherhood, and our meeting is in the name of Jesus,; therefore He is near not only to the leader or to the minister but in the midst and therefore to each worshiper. We meet to do Him honor, to hear His Word, to stir each other up to obey His will, and He is there to aid us.

Lullaby for the Lord

My Maker is a Mountain—
And I am like a flea—
I would be forgotten
Had he not looked at me.

I am mere minutia—
He: Immensity.
I'd be all but nothing
Except His charity.

From Cosmic Halls in Heaven
He nestled in a womb—
Planned humiliation—
Tortured, then a tomb.

He looked upon His Mother—
Her troubled eyes He saw—
Creator now Creation—
Eternal slept in straw.

O Dreamlord, Sweet Salvation—
Make my dreams come true—
I, figment of Your dream world—
Dream only now of You.

F. B. Meyer (1847-1929) was a Baptist minister who wrote over 75 books. This little ditty has encouraged me to keep-on-keeping on (as we Baby Boomers are wont to say when having a 1960's flashback). Our unique minds and experiences are not a mistake. We only have a little time, let us use it in serving Christ. (The two talents referred to are from Christ's parable in which each of us is given some "gift" to use. Use it.)

A Motto for Old Duffers

O God, you have taught me from my youth;
And to this day I declare your wondrous works.
Now also when I am old and gray-headed,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation
Your power to everyone who is to come.

--Psalm 71: 17-18

Commentary: The beauty of this Psalm is that it sees our lives in its totality, from childhood to our old age. It also sees our task from early age to the present point and then into the future. Our words and deeds affect those who come after us. Our purpose therefore is to declare the goodness and gospel of Jesus: God who became a Man. Every moment is a creative opportunity to proclaim Good News.

I Can’t Remember

I can’t remember what I forgot—
I forgot what I can’t remember—
My memory is going all to rot—
It’s been like this since December.

Or was it failing in October?
I really can’t recall—
No, no—it was just last September—
Or was it the previous Fall?

So what again was your name?
I think I know what it is not—
But really I am not to blame—
I can’t remember what I forgot.

For the Mother of Our Lord:
A Protestant Poem

O Jewish girl, so frail and pure—
Predestined for great sorrow—
Protestant praise, we honor you—
Romanesque, we borrow.

Obedient Maid, Daughter of Eve—
O Messianic womb—
A sword was made to split your heart—
Your Son, Our Son, His doom.

But God, your Lord, our Lord, decreed—
You, Virgin, would conceive—
And by foreknowledged prophecy
Our damnation reprieve.

O Jewish girl, so great and pure—
Your Son sits on His Throne—
Your name is now forever blessed,
The Glory is His Own.
