Good Morning,

We want to begin the morning by welcoming you to the worship service at the Church of Christ in Coal City, Indiana. We are glad that you have obeyed the commandment to assemble upon the first day of the week the way the church is intended to according to scripture. We are truly blessed to be loved by our Heavenly Father and to serve in His name bearing the title of Christian after His only begotten Son. This morning we are going to take a look at some “False Impressions about the Christian Faith.” This evening we will look at some ways to “Deny Ungodliness & Worldly Lusts”.

Introduction:

The United States of America is rapidly changing. We used to be a Judeo/Christian nation, meaning that the majority of people in this nation were either Jews or considered themselves to be Christians. This has changed. Now we have many cultures within our nation. Many people embrace world religions like Islam or Hinduism. Others who grew up in “Christian” homes have forsaken their religious tradition. Many are not members of any religious group. There is, however, a Christian influence within our nation. At times, they raise their voice loud enough to make a difference, especially with regard to moral issues. They are influential enough that others know “a little bit” about us. The “little bit” that others know about us though is often quite distorted. We learn this when our opponents use our Christianity against us. This morning we are going to talk about some of the “False Impressions about the Christian Faith” that people have in their minds.

SR: Romans 13:8, Matthew 5:44, Matthew 7:13-14—25:41, Ephesians 1:6, II John 1:7-11, Psalms 9:17, Galatians 5:21, Revelation 21:8, John 7:24, Romans 1:16-17, Matthew 5:9, Romans 12:18, Matthew 10:34, Mark 16:15, II Corinthians 10:3-5, Acts 4:18-20—17:22-23

Sunday Evening: Denying Ungodliness & Worldly Lusts

Introduction:

Christianity is not just a blessing to be received; it is a life that is to be lived. If we tried to live it on our own, we could not. Jeremiah 10:23 O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Those who trust in the Lord, seek their direction from Him. Proverbs 3:4-5 So shalt thou find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man. (5) Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart, And lean not upon thine own understanding: How we are to live is taught us by the grace of God. It involves negatives and positives. Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, (12) instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world; In this lesson we want to focus on the negative aspects of this text, that is, “Denying Ungodliness and Worldly Lusts.”

SR: Galatians 6:14, Colossians 1:13, Philippians 3:2, Galatians 5:16, I John 3:9, I John 2:15,
Daniel 3:16-18, Genesis 39:10-12

Let us continue to refresh ourselves and work on being better Christians in 2018. We should be praying without ceasing. We should be reading our Bibles every single day. We should be taking advantage of any and all opportunities to spread the Gospel of Christ to the lost ones. I hope that you will renew your faith this year and become right with God once again or if you haven’t yet obeyed the Gospel that you will begin that journey soon, knowing the cost of denying it. If you have questions or simply want to talk, feel free to get ahold of me or the elders.

Good Morning,

Welcome to services at the church of Christ at Coal City. We are pleased that you’ve heeded the Word of God on worship and have made the choice to attend a body of the church that Christ purchased with His own blood, and spread by His apostles. We have the command to go unto all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. This morning we continue will be concerned with our souls, as we usually are, with a lesson entitled, “Soul Searching Questions.” This evening we will look at a lesson entitled, “What do I say?”

Introduction:

We live in a world that is consumed with the outer man. We eat right and exercise to keep it healthy. We have surgeries to keep it looking young. There are thousands of medical personnel who specialize in specific components of the body. We spend thousands of dollars upon vitamins and supplements to keep the body strong and active. Because of this emphasis, many have almost forgotten they have a soul. It is as if, the soul is of secondary importance, if it is important at all. Many churches have begun to cater to the outer man. Ministries have been developed to meet every need. Sermons and classes are intended to enrich life in the here and now. Sermons on sin, hell, and duty to God are considered old fashion, even taboo. There comes a time when a person needs to stop and really contemplate the state of his/her soul. Why? Ecclesiastes 12:7 and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it. In this lesson, we want you to consider some “Soul-Searching Questions.”

SR: I Thessalonians 5:23, Luke 12:16-20, Ecclesiastes 12:7, II Corinthians 5:8, Philippians 1:23,
I John 3:9-10, Hebrews 13:17, James 1:19-20, Hebrews 9:27, II Corinthians 5:10, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 25:41

Sunday Evening: What do I Say?

Introduction:

Peter was clear when he admonished us to be ready to give an answer to other 1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear. Sanctification, Preparation, Duration, Communication, Opposition, Disposition. This is an overwhelming responsibility. There are literally thousands of things that people can ask us. When they ask some questions, we wonder in our mind: “What do I say?” Some questions, however, are more common than others. Sadly, some are not ready to answer the common questions. In this lesson, we want to look at some of the more common questions and answers and provide a reasonable Biblical response.

SR: Ephesians 4:4, Ephesians 5:23, Matthew 26:28, Hebrews 9:18-23, Mark 16:16, I Peter 3:21,
Matthew 28:20, Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, Ephesians 4:11, I Peter 5:1-2

This morning we continue in our series of lessons entitled, “Be an Olympian.” This evening we will look at a lesson entitled, “What do I say?”

Introduction:

Every child of God can make some boasts to others. I am a priest of the Most High God (I Peter 2:9). I am a king in the Lord’s kingdom (Revelation 1:6). I am a living stone in the temple of God (I Peter 2:5). We can also say: “I am an Olympian!” In Paul’s writings, he often compares the Christian life to the Olympics. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 Know ye not that they that run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Even so run; that ye may attain. (25) And every man that striveth in the games exerciseth self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. We will conclude our series of lessons comparing Christians to Olympians this morning.

Introduction:

There is great honor in being an Olympian. There is even more honor in being an Olympian who receives a medal. The greatest honor, however, goes to the Olympian who receives the gold medal. The apostle Paul compares the Christian life to the Olympics in the New Testament. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, The cloud of witness: those in the stands who are cheering for the Olympians. Weights: the training weights used before the actual race. The race that is set before us: the Olympic race itself. My friends, there is honor in participating in the Christian Olympics. The world might deny this. Those in the world might chastise us for this. One day, however, those who compete in the race and complete it will be given great honor by the Judge of all. 2 Timothy 4:8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing. We will continue to make our comparisons between the Olympic competitors and Christians.

Good Morning (1/21/2018),

Welcome to services at the church of Christ at Coal City. We are pleased that you’ve heeded the Word of God on worship and have made the choice to attend a body of the church that Christ purchased with His own blood, and spread by His apostles. We have the command to go unto all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. This morning we begin a new series of lessons entitled, “Be an Olympian.” This evening we will look at a lesson entitled, “By What Authority?”.

Introduction:

The winter Olympics are going to begin in just a few weeks. These types of games were held hundreds and hundreds of years ago in a town in Greece called Olympia. The modern Olympics, however, were founded in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The organization that oversees the Olympics events is known as the International Olympic Committee. The Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The athletes will compete in roughly 98 different events with somewhere around 2850 athletes from 89 different countries over the course of around 17 days. It is interesting that Paul often used the Olympic games to discuss some aspects of the Christian life. 1 Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they that run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Even so run; that ye may attain. Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: (8) henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing. This morning we want to examine some of the comparisons that exist between the Olympic Games and the Christian Life.

SR: John 3:16, Romans 3:29, II Corinthians 5:14, I Timothy 2:3-4, Matthew 11:29, Revelation 22:17, II Timothy 3:16-17, Deuteronomy 27:10, Revelation 22:14, I Peter 1:13, I Corinthians 9:25-27

Sunday Evening: By What Authority?

Introduction:

Throughout His life, Jesus often came into contact with the Temple. On the eighth day after His birth, He was circumcised at the temple. At the age of twelve, He confounded the doctors of the law at the temple. During His temptation, the devil took Him up to a pinnacle of the temple and challenged Him to cast Himself down. Early in His ministry, He cleansed the Temple. He went to the temple area in order to teach the Jews. There were several confrontations with the Jewish leaders at the temple. Jesus foretold of the temple’s destruction. Our question this evening stems from an event in Jesus’ life that transpired at the temple. Our question for this lesson stems from an event in Jesus’ life that transpired at the temple (Luke 19:45-20:8). Within this text we learn much about authority. Let’s consider some of the lessons that we learn.

SR: Luke 19:45-20:8, Colossians 3:17, Matthew 28:18-19, II John 1:9, Luke 20:4-5, Matthew 24:35, John 12:48, Luke 7:30—20:15-16, II Thessalonians 1:7-9

As we begin our journey in this new year we should be making a renewed commitment to serve the Lord our God.

One of the most important aspects of New Testament worship is the Lord’s Supper, but what “What are we really saying with the Lord’s Supper?”

Introduction:

In harmony with the example of the early church, we gather upon the first day of the week to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight. The denominational world tells us that a weekly observance is too much. They assert that it causes the Lord’s Supper to become commonplace. This view puts human reasoning above the authority of God’s Word. Having said this, we now must agree that the Lord’s Supper can become a mindless ritual in which we engage for a few minutes during the worship service. This problem has nothing to do with the frequency of observance. It has everything to do with the heart of the believer. To overcome a lackadaisical attitude during the Lord’s Supper, we must really engage the mind and temper the body. To assist us, we want to ask and answer this question: “When me partake of the Lord’s Supper, what are we really saying to the world?”

SR: Matthew 1:23, John 8:24, Galatians 4:4, I John 4:9-10, John 1:14, Philippians 2:5-8,
I Corinthians 11:26, Luke 23:46, Matthew 26:29, I Corinthians 11:26, John 14:3, Acts 1:10-11,
II Peter 3:10

As we get closer to the end of 2017 I pray that you’ll make the choice to obey the will of God. As we know through studying the Bible you must first hear the Word of God, then come to believe that He is, repent of your past ways thus making a commitment to aim towards heaven, confess Christ before men, be baptized into Christ, and remain faithful unto death. If you’ve already obeyed the Gospel command, but have slipped in this past year, renew your faith by asking God for forgiveness and making a commitment to growing in 2018. Feel free to contact me or any of the elders for anything.

We have the command to go unto all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Hope is incredibly important, it propels us. This morning we will look at “Our Lively Hope.” Our topic this evening will look into “Authority.”

Introduction:

Hope is one of the motivating forces of life. The sick will persevere if there is hope. The unskilled will practice if there is hope. The downcast will press on if there is hope. The farmer will plow if there is hope. The preacher will preach if there is hope. Hope is an important force within the Christian religion. Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; (5) one Lord, one faith, one baptism, (6) one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all. In Hebrews 7:19, our hope is referred to as “a better hope.” Our hope is rooted in Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope; This morning, we are going to examine hope from 3 different outlooks.

Introduction:

Man’s destruction comes in many forms. Losing cherished relationships, losing positions of power and influence, physical harm to one’s body, loss of health, loss of wealth, and ultimately, the loss of one’s soul. How man destroys himself has many causes. Last week we looked at some ways this is done. Today, let’s look at some more of the ways man brings his own destruction.

Introduction:

It is quite the enjoyable pleasurable experience to watch someone excel in this world as a Christian. It is amazing to see them grow in knowledge and in works for the church. At the same time, it is just as sad to watch someone destroy himself, especially whenever they are a Christian. We unfortunately are seeing too much of this here locally. Let’s take a look together at the numerous causes of a person’s destruction, so that we can better combat these issues going forward.

I hope that you have recognized the power of God today. I pray that you have obeyed the Gospel and went through the steps of salvation and that if you already have you are continuing in the faith as the Word of God commands. Feel free to contact any of the elders or you are welcome to contact me if you have any questions.
