Why Ash Wednesday?

Ashes are a symbol of mortality and repentance, since “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). When the pastor places them on the penitents, often in the shape of a cross, he speaks a sobering reminder: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19).

We ourselves will not overcome the temptations of Satan, our sinful flesh and death, but Christ our champion will. Throughout the coming season, we will watch as He endures and overcomes the devil with his works and ways, suffers willingly for our sakes, and redeems us by His blood and Passion. Faith trusts in Him and believes, even from the ash heap, that “a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).

We invite you to join us this evening at 6pm, and then each Wednesday evening throughout this Lenten season.

Holy Week is here. During this time, Christians remember Jesus’ journey to the cross as He triumphantly entered Jerusalem, washed His disciples’ feet and instituted the Lord’s Supper, was betrayed, wrongfully accused, beaten, scorned, crucified and killed for the sins of mankind. After three days in the grave, we remember Jesus’ resurrection—rising from the dead—on the first Easter morning.

We invite you to join us. We have services this Thursday, Friday, and two on Sunday. All services will be live-streamed except for Easter Sunrise.

Lent is when we, as God's people, focus on Jesus's promises and actions. Specifically, we focus on His journey to the cross where He took on our sins and granted salvation to those who trust and believe in Him.

We continue this Lenten journey with Wednesday evening midweek services at 6 p.m. We also invite you to a meal beforehand at 5 p.m.

Our Ash Wednesday service is at 6pm this evening. We invite you to join us.

Ash Wednesday marks the solemn entrance into this Lenten season of reflection and repentance. We receive ashes on our foreheads and hear the words from Genesis 3: "Remember, O Man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return."

The ashes show our mortality. They are a sign of the rock-bottom reality of life in a fallen world and serve as a reminder that the price of sin is death.

Ashes also tell us the good news of the Gospel! Ashes aren’t just smeared randomly or haphazardly across people’s foreheads. The ashes are given in the shape of the cross. In receiving the ashes, we remember that our Lord Jesus took on the fullness of our humanity. He who was sinless became our sin. Jesus the Christ was crucified on a cross. He was crucified for you. Then Jesus conquered death itself through His resurrection. He was resurrected for you. In doing so, He has taken the ashes of our past and created in us new life, allowing us to live forever in the holy presence of God! He has redeemed His children, making us clean and new. Through the cross of Christ, the power of death has been destroyed. Through the cross there is life. The cross-shaped ashes on our foreheads proclaim the good news that sin and death have been conquered through the cross of Christ.
