I learned today three types of fear:
1. Fret is gnawing fear.
2. Worry is tormenting fear.
3. Anxiety is distressing fear.
One thing I teach my mindset coaching clients is that repetitive thoughts and emotions become habits. Thoughts and emotions must be challenged. For example, if you're prone to fear, why? Past disappointment? Learned behavior as a child? Overthinker?
To me fear is one of the worst conditions to live in because I have before. It is, indeed, tormenting. It gnaws at any joy or peace you have. But here's a fact many don't realize: fear is a choice. And like any habit, you can reverse it.
The easiest way for a believer to reverse it is to pick a few key scriptures on the topic (great ones in Matthew 6 and Phil. 4) and chew on them over and over and over.
Second, recognize that fear is the result of chaos and disappointment. We carry those emotions over to our perception of Father waiting for the other shoe to drop and the goodness we are experiencing to stop. That's not how He is. He is good ALL THE TIME, which takes me to the third thing.
Third, critically examine any doctrine or teaching you've heard that promotes fear and disempowers your belief in God's goodness like that He allows bad things to happen, He punishes over the slightest infraction, and sometimes He does good things (like heals) and sometimes He doesn't. We are promised persecution but make sure you're not fearing things Jesus died to remove from your life and understand that our walk with Him is progressive but He gives us grace as we are learning.
And, fourth, fear is a constant need to prove God. Prove He's faithful. Prove He will do what He said He would. Prove He loves you, etc. That's a dangerous place to live. God is not to be tested in those ways. Instead, feast on things He's done for you in the past (miracles, answered prayer, etc) and allow them to encourage you. Analyze how He worked and what your role was. Let the miracle tutor you. Ask Him to show you specifics on why some things you hoped for didn't happen. He's very happy to do that. He is good and can be trusted. đź’Ą
