WHY "JUST THIS ONCE" RARELY STAYS JUST ONCE

We've got a limited number of weeks on this planet, and if we want to make the most of the moments we've been given, the little things actually matter.

There are phenomenally tempting things out there, and every day of our lives something is calling out, "Hey, check me out. Hey, chase me just for a minute."

Something inside us wants to believe we can pursue those temptations as a pit stop and not a pathway. We bet we could go that way for a minute without any real consequence.

What we picture as simple, temporary, momentary diversions often become new directions that end up in disastrous destinations, but we don't see it in the moment.

Solomon stops the story right there to speak to everyone who would ever read his words, including you and me, in Proverbs 7:24-25: "Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths."

Ways and paths? So many people have made that mistake, thinking they could live with a disconnection between the dreams they were chasing and the directions they were choosing, and still get there.

Nobody wakes up and decides to blow up their life, but sometimes we make decisions that lead in the direction of destruction. Every direction has a destination attached to it, and those destinations become the stories of our lives.

That's why the little things matter so much, so let's be intentional about the choices that lead toward who we're meant to become. That one minute won't knock us off course, will it?

WHY YOU QUIT BEFORE IT EVER STARTS WORKING

Small investments compound. Thirty minutes of exercise five days a week, dinner at the table two or three nights, your Bible before your phone, a prayer before your first deep breath. Do that year after year and you'll build something.

Time works the way money works. Little deposits, made regularly, add up while you're not watching them. Regular disciplines have a cumulative effect on a life.

Showing up counts most on the days you'd rather stay home. Everyone who's ever been in a small group has had weeks of I do not want to do this tonight. Sometimes that's most weeks.

Keep showing up anyway, and your life pays the dividends. Doing life and faith with close community over years builds something you can stand on, and your family can stand on it with you.

The catch is that it's hard. Habits are hard to start, so we settle for trying things occasionally. One installment of anything rarely pays off.

You decide you're getting in shape. You buy the Bowflex, you run for the first time in forever, and the next morning you look exactly the same and you feel considerably worse.

Other people notice too, and what they notice is that you're struggling to sit down. Encouragement rarely follows. So, we quit right before the habits start paying off.

Consistency, steady habits, and little investments made over and over add up to something big. Neglect adds up the same way, quietly, in the other direction. Which one are your ordinary days building right now?
