Good afternoon, United In Christ UMC family,
A friend of mine shared this song with me a little while ago and it was much needed and I felt inspired to share it with you. For those of you who were in church on 9/27 you heard me share something that was very personal. For the sake of anonymity we didn't record the service because I didn't want anyone close to me to be hurt by what I shared.
The chorus of this song says:
Thank God for the anger that forced me to pray
Thank God for the silence that taught me to wait
If He spared me from breaking, and God knows I did
Then I never would've ever known how good God is
I never would've ever known how good God is
Now...think about those words for a moment. Take them in....
Thank God for the anger...
Thank God for the silence...
If He spared me from breaking...
Those are very deep and humbling words that strike to the core of my being. The thing that consistently humbles me is that God never demands perfection from us. There are going to be times we're angry. There are going to be times when God's silence seems as if he's not listening. There are going to be times when we're broken.
When you read through the Bible you read of human pain, suffering and struggle. Read through the Psalms and you will read many pleas to God, crying out, "Where are you?" Jacob wrestled with God. Job couldn't understand why God allowed everything to be taken from him...including his health. Elijah ran away and hid in a cave. Jonah preferred death over seeing God forgive the Ninevites...the very people that tortured his people. Even Jesus questioned God the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane.
The thing that I have come to love about scripture is not that life is fair, but that through our pain, suffering and sorrow, God is there. In fact, in 2 Corinthians 12:10, Paul wrote: "I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
When he refers to being "strong", he's not talking about HIS strength, he's talking about depending on God for strength. He delighted in weakness...in all kinds of difficulties...because he knew that, regardless of how weak he was...physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually...that God was with him and, therefore, he was strong.
Regardless of what you may be going through, remember...God Is Good.
