Understanding our Mission and Values
“The most important part of the leader is her or his heart, and the most important connection to a leader’s heart is God. Leading like Jesus means loving like Jesus. Leading like Jesus is essentially a matter of the heart.”
Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges and Phyllis Hendry
The rule of 5 to value people
1. Every day I will add value to people. People do not on
ly look for service when they come to us. They are not customers. People mean relationships. They also seek worth, belonging, and purpose. These three essential things only God can give. Nevertheless, we are God’s channels. If I value and care, I ask myself: How can I add value to you?
2. Every day I’ll think of ways to add value to people. Before I get to that person, I am intentionally thinking: What can I do to add value to them? People give up time to be with us. How can I be good to them? I am only as good as my last thinking, word, and action. A small act of love means everything.
3. Every day I’ll look for ways to add value to people. You see who you are, not what you see. If you abide in abundance, you will see abundance. Who I am determines what I see. Self-awareness is necessary for us to grow and change.
4. Every day I reflect on how I cared and added value to people. Self-evaluation. Feedback.
5. Every day I encourage others to add value to people. The greatest inspiration for others to make changes is that we make those changes in our lives. And for that, we need to stop the downhill line and start the uphill line. Reflection on our mission and values here in St. Brendan and St. George
Mission (refined):
Our mission is to introduce and communicate Christ and the gospel to others through a culture of love, mercy, hope, and service. Values: We choose to grow, share, and serve as our deepest values. Grow: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit - fruit that will last- and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give. This is my command: "Love each other.” (John 15:16-17). Growing includes the habit of love and charity. We must grow together and in an attitude of love and trust in the Father. Share: “Then Jesus came to them and said: ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). Every person is a potential disciple of Christ. We must reach out to them. Jesus’ vision is big. He wants all to be his disciples and participate in his mission and vision. Serve: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, whoever wants to be first must be your slave -Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26-28). “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14-15). Becoming available for service is a choice we must make it a habit. May God bless you always. Jesus Peralta
