First Presbyterian Church, Clifton, TX

First Presbyterian Church, Clifton, TX First Presbyterian Church, Clifton, is composed of a welcoming congregation of believers serving together. The congregation had its first minister in 1906. Rev.

First Presbyterian Church of Clifton is the oldest continuous church congregation in Bosque County. The church was organized in January 1861 before Abraham Lincoln's inauguration by five Scottish and English families and chartered as the North Bosque Presbyterian Church. It was first located about two miles from the present town of Clifton on the east bank of the Bosque River. Charter member Allen

Anderson was killed in a Comanche Indian raid and at least two places of worship were washed away during flooding of the river. For more than 40 years, Presbyterians worshipped with supplied ministers in schools and in other locations before having a church of their own in 1904 in our current location. Church membership grew to 100 by the 50th anniversary in 1911. Times were tough in the early years, with the women of the church picking cotton to pay the pastor's salary in the 1920s. For 25 years, from 1968-83, the church held a joint ministry with the United Church of Christ at Womack. Since that time, the church has had three full-time pastors. Clint Schofield has led the congregation since 2004. The church underwent a renovations and expansion in 2006. The congregation has evolved from 12 charter members in1861 to a group of some 130 today. The church has survived floods, droughts, the Civil War, Indian attacks, two World Wars, numerous locations, and as few as three members. Today our growing congregation gives thanks as we celebrate our rich and blessed history and look towards a bright future of serving God in Bosque County and beyond.

The Sunday worship service on June 7 was filled with a good message from Rev. Paul Merrill and special music from a visiting friend, Terry Beall, of San Antonia. Terry and his wife, Cindy, are old friends of First Presbyterian Church choir director Belinda Honea. While visiting Belinda for the weekend, Terry agreed to accompany Belinda on two beautiful numbers, "Captivate Us," and for the Offertory, "Make It Well". Thank you, Terry, for sharing your beautiful voice and music talents with our church family. Your music was a blessing.

It was a busy weekend in the life of First Presbyterian Church. On Saturday, a reception was held for the family of Marie Whitewhite, a longtime friend of our church family and mother of Choir Director Belinda Honea. A Celebration of Life Service for Marie was held at First Baptist Church May 23, with Brother Jerry Smith and former pastor of FPC, Rev. Clint Schofield, leading the service. Afterwards the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall was site for a reception for family and friends.

On Sunday, Rev. Dr. Stuart Pickell filled the pulpit while Rev. Paul Merrill is on vacation. Rev. Pickell gave a powerful sermon on Pentecost Sunday, which is observed on May 24, or 50 days following Easter and extends until Advent. Rev. Pickell said Pentecost Sunday is sometimes known as "The Birthday of the Church" because of the original charge to spread the good news of the gospel among the disciples. He said that same mission holds true today as God calls each of us to do likewise.

Rev. Pickell titled his sermon "How Can I Keep from Singing?" His message was brought to life with insightful stories about a little girl wjp began singing spontaneously during movie many years ago, his own young son's impatience waiting to open a special gift, and a pet parakeet named Chippy who loved to sing but was sucked into a vacuum. Each example brought smiles, laughter, and meaning to the sermon.

"The Spirit that guides us fills our hearts. So how can we keep from singing," Rev. Pickell asked. "Who among us doesn't long for that kind of unbridled joy?" Rev. Pickell reminded those gathered, "God's spirit is present in good times and bad. God's spirit surrounds us and is always there."
