Brookdale Orchard 2026 Part 7: Wade Park Cluster Congregations Community Day!

Even though we were stripped of what would have been autumn harvest at the end of this month (see Part 6), Brookdale Orchard's tent at the August 29 Wade Park Cluster Congregations Community Day was very popular because along with giving out produce, we served watermelon slices!

I was so busy teaching children how to play good ole fashioned games - ring toss, jump rope, hoola hoop, croquet, badminton - that I didn't take many photos. But here's one with our Ward 8 Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones with members of St. Matthew, The Star of Bethel MBC, and visitors to the Brookdale Orchard tent.

When you’re in the middle of it with six balls in the air at one time, you just don’t have the time, but I have a lot to share from a full spring into summer season at Brookdale Orchard! At some point, we will update our website with a more detailed photo reflection and narrative of 2026 at Brookdale Orchard. Until then, take a deep breath as we try to play catch up with a few snippets! This will take several posts, but Enjoy Part 6

Disappointingly, there will be no harvesting and preserving of fruit this year, thanks to the unconscionable overnight theft of every pear in Eden Pear Garden, and following the bishop’s visit, every peach in the memorial garden. We are so thankful that he got to see the trees full. While we did witness a few squirrels run off with a peach here and there, they were not the wholesale culprits! The consequence, we have to raise nearly $4,000 in funds currently not budgeted to install security lighting and cameras in our seven gardens situated on twenty parcels over three blocks.

A highlight for the Orchard was hosting a luncheon for Bishop Hee-Soo Jung, Resident Bishop of the Ohio Episcopal Area United Methodist Church, with members of our community and the three Black inner-city UMC congregations Mother Cory, St. Matthew and Willson on August 20.

Thanks to the kind and generous sponsorship of two of Mittie Jordan’s Smith College classmates, Brookdale Orchard was represented at MS Magazine’s Foundation’s MS on Martha (Martha’s Vineyard) on August 18. We were saddened to learn at the time of this posting of the passing of MS Founding Mother, and our Smith alumna mate Gloria Steinem. Long may her courageous spirit live!

This was our first year partnering with Cleveland’s Youth Opportunity Unlimited program, hosting and training high school students to serve as teen leaders for our summer youth program, and alongside mission team leaders when visiting teams were on site. In addition to providing peer leadership, their enrichment courses included gardening, carpentry, movement, wind energy, and African American history & culture.

Our mission team leaders arrived at the end of May, followed by eight mission teams throughout June through July. As ever, we are so thankful for the gifts of time, hard work, kindness, and Agape love that they share while with us.

Our season kicked off with the Orchard hosting the culminating rally and tree planting on April 11 for the Cleveland Nonviolent Network Tree March: Plant Trees Not Bombs. We featured the march in our Special Arbor Day Edition of Grapevine at the end of April. You can subscribe to Grapevine at brookdaleorchard.org.
