CloudWater Zendo

CloudWater Zendo, the Zen Center of Cleveland, is a Zen center and Buddhist temple based in Cleveland, Ohio.

We are dedicated to Ch'an meditation (also known as Zen), the 5 Elements School of Pure Land Buddhism (a contemporary rendering of traditional Pure Land Buddhism), the practice of traditional meditative arts and the study of Buddhist teachings. We are also the home of the Nien-Fo Order of Ch'an Buddhist Monks. CloudWater Zendo operates affiliated meditation groups in Canton, Ohio (Golden Wisdom Ze

n Meditation), Toledo, Ohio (Golden Dragon Zen Meditation), Penguin, Tasmania (Buddha-Heart Fellowship) and at two Ohio correctional facilities.

ULLAMBANA MEMORIAL SERVICE AND ZENDO PICNIC TODAY AT 11:00 a.m. Our annual memorial service and Zendo picnic will be held at the North Mastick Picnic Area of the Rocky River Metroparks. ANIMAL MEMORIAL SERVICE AND BLESSING TODAY AT 11 a.m. The fish are flying and the shrines are set. Come down to the North Mastick Picnic Area of the Rocky River Metroparks and bring your animal friends as well as your mementos of animal friends past. A vegetarian/vegan potluck will follow the blessing.

ANIMAL BLESSING AND MEMORIAL SERVICE THIS SUNDAY AT 11:00 a.m. In ancient times, Buddhist monks purchased live animals which were to be used for food and released them, demonstrating their deep respect for all life. Based on this venerable practice, the Animal Blessing and Memorial Service serves as a reminder of the role of animals in the interdependent chain of life. The service will be held at the North Mastick Picnic Area of the Cleveland Metroparks. It includes the blessing of various categories of animals, the blessing of animals who have been brought to the service, and the release of living creatures into nature to the chanting of the Heart Sutra. All are invited to bring pets to be blessed as well as mementos of departed pet friends, and you are also invited to bring a vegetarian or vegan potluck dish to share following the service.

OUR CONDOLENCES go to the family of Joe Ahern, who passed away on Saturday. Joe was a Dharma brother of mine who "showed me the ropes" when I first joined Cleveland Buddhist Temple in 1986. Through the years, Joe was a good friend, a dedicated Buddhist practitioner, and a supporter of CloudWater Zendo. He also worked to bring about peace in the Middle East, and participated in local interfaith activities. We dedicate merit to Joe's fortunate rebirth. Thank you for everything, Joe. Amitabha!

Due to the Extreme Heat Warning which has been issued, CloudWater Zendo will be closed this evening, 6/30/26. We will be conducting group meditation this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. The link can be found on our website calendar: https://cloudwater.org/events/month/2026-07/

We urge everyone to do their best to stay cool, and please be sure to check on those who may be adversely affected by the high heat such as seniors and people who may be ill.
