WESAK CELEBRATION AT THE ZENDO THIS EVENING AT 7:00. On the full moon day of May, Buddhists around the world celebrate Wesak, commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvana of the Buddha. A look at the Buddha’s life can give us some insight into our own existence.

Siddhartha Gautama was born into wealth but eventually became disenchanted with his life. He tried to solve his problem by leaving his family’s “comfort zone.” He eventually learned how to attain calmness and insight but he was still disenchanted, so he decided to mortify his body in order to pacify his mind.

When Siddhartha realized that this was a step too far, he decided to navigate the path between extremes – and it worked! The answer to his difficulties was to practice deep insight, balance, reason and loving-kindness. He became an Awakened One whose teachings have benefited countless beings.

Our current situation may have caused many of us to leave our "comfort zones" as well. We may have gone to our own extremes: overeating, oversleeping, binge-watching, anything to break the spell. But still it isn’t enough. We may have become frustrated, irritated, fearful, even angry.

So what’s the alternative? We can emulate Siddhartha, who renounced the path of self-mortification for one of generosity, reasonable behavior, patience, perseverance, meditative concentration and just seeing things as they are. This is what will get us through these difficult times, and we’ll be better people for it.

OUR FIRST OUTDOOR ZEN WALK OF THE YEAR takes place on Sunday, April 27th, 10:00 a.m. at the Rocky River Nature Center. The walk will include a contemplation, a Dharma Talk, and a group discussion. We’ll meet at the north parking lot adjacent to Shepherd’s Hill Lane. Be sure to wear good shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

CHAN RETREAT: "DEDICATING MERIT FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR NATION" Sunday, March 23rd, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. At times it becomes necessary to bring the power of our intention to bear in order to aid the culture in which we live and which allows us to practice the Buddha-Dharma. With this in mind, the theme for our March retreat will be “Dedicating Merit For The Benefit Of Our Nation.” The retreat will center on how we may dedicate the merit we accrue through various practices for the benefit of our country in these uncertain times.

The retreat will include seated and walking meditation, chanting, Dharma Talks and Qigong internal energy exercises. All are welcome. A vegetarian/vegan lunch will be provided. FEE: $5 or donation.

GONGFU TEA AT TODAY'S LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION. Venerable Shih Yingfa will serve Gongfu Tea for our guests as we celebrate the Year of the Snake at CloudWater Zendo. The festivities get underway at noon and go until 4:00 p.m. Asian Town Center will host a Chinese Lion Dance at noon in the main hallway, so be sure not to miss it. Everyone's welcome to come down and enjoy the day.

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR! Welcome to the Year of the Snake. Our Lunar New Year Celebration will be held this Sunday from noon until 4:00 p.m. at our new location in Asian Town Center, 3820 Superior Avenue. The Center will be presenting a Lion Dance at noon, so come down early and enjoy the festivities. The Zendo's celebration will include a vegetarian/vegan potluck and the serving of Gongfu Tea in the Meditation Hall. All are invited to join us as we ring in the Year of the Wood Snake.
