In a few short days, we will celebrate our annual Homecoming. For months, our church members have been fervently praying for this day as many get to reunite with family, rejoice in God’s blessings, and look to the future for their families and the church.
But for many young members, the longstanding history and tradition of the church and the day may not be known.
A quick stop at the White County Historical Society helped reveal some heartwarming details.
The original church building was built in the 1830s, or perhaps even earlier. Some church recollections date back as early as 1823, when the church meeting place was only a brush arbor. Over the years, Tesnatee Baptist Church has stood as more than a landmark. It has been a living testimony to faith, fellowship, and devotion to God. Generations have gathered here not because of the architecture, but because of the unchanging message proclaimed within its walls: Jesus Christ died for our sins, and we have so much to thank Him for.
The church has withstood many trials, including surviving at least two fires in the early 1900s that could have ended its existence. Yet, this resilience only underscores the deeper truth: Tesnatee Baptist Church is defined not by its physical structure, but by its steadfast devotion to the Lord, Jesus Christ. The church's endurance is a testament to a community anchored in Christ, unwavering through every season of change.
Every year, on the 2nd Sunday in October, we commemorate our founding and renew our commitment to the values that have sustained us for nearly two centuries. It also serves as a day of remembrance and celebration for the members who have left this earth to be with our Lord. This day is not simply a date on the calendar; it is a celebration of faith, endurance, and the eternal promise of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Looking back, some used to call the annual Homecoming , the “all-day singing”. We would worship in the morning with music and preaching; break for lunch, and then come back to finish the day with more worship. Many members can remember running around the outdoor pavilion playing as children or listening to heartfelt stories by church elders. Even though many members were not related biologically, the day felt like a much needed family reunion. As time has passed, the proceedings of the day have changed a bit but the feeling and excitement of the day has not.
While time alters wood and stone, it cannot erode conviction. Tesnatee Baptist Church proves that faith is not bound by the shape of a building but by the hearts of those who worship within it. The church’s survival through fires and the passage of time is not an accident of history—it is evidence of a community firmly rooted in the love of Christ, an enduring legacy that continues to inspire and uplift.
We would love for you to join us on Sunday, October 12th @ 10:30 AM for our annual Homecoming. Josie and Warren Cole will be singing.
Hope to see you there!
