Patriarch Porfirije Officiates at the Funeral Service for the Newly Reposed General Ratko Mladić

His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije officiated at the funeral service for the newly reposed General Ratko Mladić on September 7, 2026, at the Church of the Holy Apostle Luke in Košutnjak.

Before the bier of the Commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, and with the prayerful participation of members of General Mladić’s family, his comrades-in-arms, state representatives, and tens of thousands of faithful who had come to the capital from Republika Srpska and all Serbian lands, the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church was concelebrated by Their Eminences, the Metropolitans: Vasilije of Srem, Nikanor of Banat, Irinej of Bačka, Fotije of Zvornik-Tuzla, Atanasije of Mileševa, and Metodije of Budimlje-Nikšić; and Their Graces, the Bishops: Isihije of Valjevo, Jerotej of Šabac, Sava of Marča, Dositej of Lipljan and the Military, and Nikon of Jenopolje, together with numerous clergy and monastics from several dioceses of the Church of Saint Sava.

Addressing those gathered, His Holiness emphasized:

“Today we stand before the bier of the servant of God and our brother, General Ratko, whom we know to have been a Christian, and concerning whom the priests who visited him bear witness that in recent years he humbly confessed his sins and received Holy Communion—the Body and Blood of Christ—believing and placing his hope in the mercy and love of God, and who at the end of his earthly life reposed holding the Cross of Christ upon his breast.

We know that his name will remain deeply woven into the memory and prayers of the greater part of our Serbian Orthodox people, who feel and cherish profound gratitude toward him, seeing him as a soldier and commander who, in a difficult and tragic time, stood at the head of the army of his people, bore immense responsibility and burden, made sacrifices, and laid down his life for the freedom, defense, and survival of his people.

Today we stand before a life that cannot be separated from a terrible time—from a dreadful war, immense suffering, deep wounds and traumas, lost homes, lost lives, and graves.

And therefore, as we pray today for the soul of the departed, for the soul of General Ratko, following the example of Christ our Lord, we also pray for all those whose lives were extinguished in that war.

With one soul, one mind, and one heart, we pray for the repose and salvation of the servant of God Ratko. We pray that the Lord may forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary, known and unknown, and grant him rest in a place of light, a place of verdure, a place of repose, from which all sickness, sorrow, and sighing have fled away, and where life is everlasting.

We also pray to the Lord that He grant consolation and hope in eternal life to his family and relatives, and that to all of us our Lord Jesus Christ may grant repentance, peace, concord, mutual understanding, and the strength always and everywhere to behold one another through the eyes of Christ.

May the Lord forgive the soul of our brother, General Ratko, and may his memory be eternal. Amen.”

Troparion to Saint Peter II of Lovćen, the Seer

Tone 4

Chosen by God and guided by your holy uncle Peter,
from your youth you devoted yourself to the Lord
and to your suffering people.
Kindled by the flame of immortal life,
you brought forth from the dust of this world
the shoot of heavenly life
and became a voice crying in the wilderness.

Glorifying Him who revealed to you His eternal Light,
you poured forth hymns of divine joy,
while mourning the sorrowful lot of mankind.

With hope you approached the Throne of the Most High,
O new Peter, Seer of Lovćen,
and humbly answered the call of Christ, the Lover of mankind,
that among the immortal choirs
you might glorify Him forever.

Prayer to Saint Peter of Lovćen

O Holy Peter II, Hermit of Cetinje and Seer of Lovćen, chosen one of God, pray to God for us.

Pray, O holy one, that your resting place may rise again, and that the church of your holy uncle Peter upon Lovćen may be restored, and above all, that the temple of God may be renewed within our hearts.

Pray that your people may rise again — your people scattered as hired servants in foreign lands, serving strangers while the fire upon their own hearth grows dim, once again left without homes upon the soil of Kosovo.

Restore our hopes, buried as though in a single grave upon Kosovo, that dread place of judgment. Dispel the thunder and darkness of false faith and false living from Montenegro and from your suffering people.

Illumine us all, and all mankind, with your wondrous vision of the Sun of Righteousness, Who has warmed the earth — the Only-begotten Son of God, worthy of the eternal Father, Who clothed Himself in our humanity, armed with the weapons of righteousness and the arrows of holy enlightenment, Who overthrows wickedness and tyranny and sanctifies virtue as a holy temple.

Teach us, O Great Martyr of Lovćen, O Serbian bard illumined by Heaven, that together with you, with all the Saints and all the heavenly hosts, we may forever sing the hymn of the Cross and Resurrection to Christ our God:

O most gracious and gentle Teacher,
how sweet is the holy and crystal water
flowing from Your immortal Fountain!
Before the radiance of Your countenance
the darkness has fled away.
By Your holy coming
the blasphemous altars have fallen.
By Your Resurrection You have conquered death;
Heaven resounds with Your praise,
and the earth glorifies her Savior!

To our God, glorified in the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.

On Sunday, August 30, we offered our prayers to God and served a memorial for General Ratko Mladić.

Before the face of eternity, all earthly disputes fall silent, and only the prayer of the Church remains: that the merciful Lord may forgive every transgression, whether voluntary or involuntary, and grant rest to the soul of His departed servant in the place where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

Grant blessed rest, O Lord, to Your departed servant, General Ratko, and grant him eternal memory!

09/01/2026

May the merciful Lord forgive every sin of His departed servant and grant him a dwelling place in His Heavenly Kingdom, where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

And may the Risen Christ grant comfort, strength, and unwavering hope to the grieving family and all their loved ones, reminding them that death is not the end, but the doorway to eternal life.

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!
