Funeral Arrangements for Shirley Burger’s Mother:
Dorothy Prentice, 94, a long time resident of Birchwood, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2026 at the family residence. Mrs. Prentice was born in Birchwood and she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth "Eliza" Newby Childs and Alexander L. Childs. Her husband, James "J. L." Prentice, her grandson, Adam Armour, her sons in law, Mike Armour, Teddy Burger, her sisters, Verna Stokes, Ruby Helton, Dean Fortner, Leona Bettis and her brothers, Leonard, Creed and Virgil Childs also preceded her in death. Mrs. Prentice was a homemaker and avid vegetable gardener. She worked in her vegetable garden into her 90's. She was known for her quilting and she quilted over 100 quilts. Mrs. Prentice loved her family and she attended the Church of God.
Survivors include her daughters, Janet Armour, Kansas City, Missouri, Shirley Burger, Cleveland, Marilyn Bales (Rodney), Birchwood, Carol Swafford (Rick), Cleveland, her 8 grandchildren, her 15 great grandchildren, her 3 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted on Monday, August 10, 2026 at 1:00 P. M. at Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee Chapel with Reverend David Evans officiating. Interment will follow in the McInturf Cemetery in Meigs County with family and friends serving as casket bearers. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A. M. until 1:00 P. M. Monday at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee Chapel who has charge of the arrangements.
