13rd Sunday of ordinary time B

A Homily by

Bishop elect William Seuffert DD

If you ever met a person with a hearing disability you notice they always have a speech impediment of some type.

In todays Gospel we see three important facts. First Jesus goes to a region known as Decapoli. Meaning this was not a Jewish region but a Roman area.

Next we see a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment was brought to Jesus.

Jesus takes the man off to the side away from the crowds puts his fingers in his ears and spits on the mans tongue.

Sounds gross right?

First off we need one mouth but two ears Jesus plugs his ears up with his fingers blocking all noise to the mans ears for the sake of only believing in Jesus listening to only Jesus. At the same time he spits on the mans tongue. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to speak if your mouth is dry.

But this is not ordinary saliva it comes from Jesus who now puts into his mouth goodness and a person can be known by his speech.

After Jesus utters a prayer the mans ears are opened and he can speak clearly.

The man can now hear the word of God and proclaim it clearly.

Which he does by telling others of the great miracle that just took place.

But Jesus tells him not to tell anyone because he probably was not a Jew.

The healing did not take place in a Jewish region after all Jesus came to the Jews first then the rest of the world.

Today how many of us hear the word but remain silent. Specially when we see an injustice. Or injustices. We must do what is the most powerful thing we can do that is first to listen then to proclaim or speak out about wrongdoings.

Today work on your hearing your neighbor cries and speak out with one voice the mercy and justice of GOd.

18th week in ordinary time B

A Homily by

If you were given a free meal every day would not you take it? Free and good food. We see in today's Gospel as we did last week Jesus feeding the multitudes with a staple of their diet barley loaf and a fish.

Now in our day and age we may think that isn't much but back then it was a lot in fact it was more than most were able to get in a day. Which is why they gather up the scraps.

Now we equate this gospel as to Jesus giving of himself or the forerunner of the eucharist.

Let's look at this in a different angle. It isn't so much Jesus feeding so many people as it is people who are hungry.

Hungry for the word of God and for the body and blood of Jesus. We claim people are not hungry enough today then we need to be like Christ and live as a disciple should live, we should make our lives, so Christ like; Christ centered that people are hungry for the word of God and for the Body of Jesus.

In each gospel we see Christ always feeding the multitudes with barley loaves. Only the well off or rich were able to afford wheat bread. The common person ate barley. We see Jesus say I am the finest wheat come down from heaven to feed us. Feed us with the gift of finest wheat. So important is it that our Gospel writers always stress what kind of loaf it is.

We as the people of God must live our life so our brothers and sisters also want what we have and that is not only the word of God but his body and blood.

Today live your life so well and conduct yourself appropriately so that others will say to themselves that they too want this bread come down from heaven. That only a priest can consecrate this special wheat that feeds not only our bodies but our souls.

God bless

12th Sunday of Ordinary time B

A Homily by

Bishop Elect William Seuffert DD.

Fear we fear many things some may fear death some dogs some cats or spiders or snakes or the open spaces of leaving the house

Some fear water or of drowning or fire.

We have so many fears and anxieties of this world it can be paralyzing and ruin our lives, or it may be upsetting if it's something we must do like speak in public.

Today's Gospel tells us even seasoned sailors can be afraid of a storm. This was not a simple tossing of the waves this was a brute of a storm.

The apostles are thinking to themselves how can anyone sleep through a storm like this?

Finally, they are forced to wake up Jesus. He probably looked and rolled his eyes at them then calmed the winds and the water instantly. It shocks the crew to no end. It was scarier than the storm as they comment who is this that the winds and waves obey him.

How many times in life do we find ourselves in such a predicament that we turn to God for help and need his assistance in overcoming daily struggles.

The one thing Jesus wants to show us in today's Gospel is that worry is useless fear is not of God nor a component of our God.

In all our prayers for mass we ask the lord to protect us from all fear and anxieties.

Every week we do this, and yet do we believe this?

Do we think that God has abandoned us? We of little faith. The God who made the heavens and the universe the earth and all it holds who remembers every single hair on our heads or every bird in the air. Cannot he help us? The one fear that we must all overcome is death. Because there really is no death we go to heaven or purgatory or hell.

The only fear is of going to hell everything else is nothing compared to having the fear of hell.

We pray each week to be forgiven we go to confession now we must trust in Jesus.

Sounds so simple and yet we still doubt we are good enough to go to heaven. Specially since we are told not everyone is going to make it to heaven. But if you maintain your faith do good works and love all and most importantly trust Jesus then you will be saved.

Today let us pray to overcome fears and anxieties and trust in Jesus.

God bless.
