This afternoon at 4:00 PM, we came together to honor the members and ministry of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd during its Holy Closure Service. On this same day, we also remembered and celebrated the life of one of its former pastors, whose Homegoing Service was held today—a poignant reminder of the legacy and faith that continue to shape our community.

Rev. Dr. Maria-Alma Rainey Copeland, widely recognized as the first African American woman pastor in the American Lutheran Church—a predecessor to the ELCA—faithfully served this Cleveland community from 1985 to 1989. Her legacy and leadership continue to inspire generations.

Costner Funeral Home | Gastonia, NC in Gastonia respectfully announces the passing of Reverend Dr. Maria-Alma Rainey Copeland on October 10, 2025.
