When Joshua led the Israelites to Jericho, and after the wall fell down, God gave Joshua specific instructions to give to the Israelites in Joshua 6: “Keep yourself from things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.” However, Achan did not obey. He took some of those devoted things, and because of it, many men died in a war.
When the Lord told Joshua that there was sin in the camp, and said things like, (chapter 7) “The people of Israel can’t stand before their enemies, in fact they turn their backs toward their enemies because they have become devoted to the things that were devoted for destruction. You must remove them if you want to stand before your enemies.”
Joshua had to scan each man in the camp to figure out who did it, saying, “Tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
After Achan fessed up, he was taken to the Valley of Achor (valley of trouble) to be stoned and burned, along with all of those things devoted for destruction.
The Valley of Achor was only spoken of two more times in the Bible, one being in Hosea 2:14-15, “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her back into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.”
Those things that were to be destroyed, that were taken for his own even though they were not his, brought destruction upon many people and eventually killed Achan from the punishment. The Valley of Achor was a place of shame for the Israelites.
But that place of shame needed to be GONE BACK TO to bring about repentance so that it can be turned into a door or a gateway of hope. What if the Lord is trying to allure you to go WITH HIM back to those places of shame, pain, and destruction, to turn it into a place of hope, redemption, and devotion to Him?
Maybe it’s time to go back there.
