Christ Lutheran Church, established in 1889, proclaimed the gospel on the corner of West 43rd and Robert Avenue until 2010. In late 2010 we were forced to sell our lovely but aging sanctuary, and are presently worshiping in the sanctuary of Unity Lutheran Church (4542 Pearl Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44109). Soon to be worshipping at our new to us sanctuary 13811 Bellaire Rd. Cleveland, Ohio 44135

Thi

s congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod holds itself out as a historic, classical and confessional Lutheran church. All this is by God's mercy, and not by our own cleverness or brilliance. Because God's spirit enables us, we celebrate holy communion each Lord's Day and on Feast Days. We are committed to the church's historic liturgy, and our services are conducted with reverence. Our preaching and teaching are in accord with holy scripture as it is understood in the Lutheran confession of faith, the Book of Concord. Christ Lutheran Church practices closed communion, which means that only members in good standing of LCMS congregations may commune at our altar. Others (including ELCA) wishing to learn of the blessings of holy communion, and to prepare to receive it, can receive instruction from the pastor. If you have received holy communion as a member of another denomination, you must still be instructed, and confess the Lutheran faith before communing at our altar. For those wishing to learn more we encourage you to attend, and to listen, learn and participate as you become familiar with the church's culture. If a person so desires, he can then begin formal instruction with the pastor leading to full membership. Please contact Pastor Kavouras with any questions, or for pastoral counsel if needed. Pastor Kavouras is a long standing chaplain with Cleveland's safety forces and the FBI, and extends a special welcome to all LE, fire and EMS officers searching for a church.

An icon is a visible Gospel. In ancient times, not so many people knew how to read, and many nations did not even have a written language. So the Gospel came to them in preaching and in icons.
This is a brief explanation of the traditional Pentecost icon: at the top, the semicircle with rays emanating outward represents the Holy Spirit descending from Heaven. The twelve seated figures are the apostles. Peter and Paul are sitting upstairs facing each other. Paul was still the Pharisee Saul at that time, and he then persecuted the early Christians. However, since Paul played a vital role in spreading the Gospel and became the founder of domestic Churches, he is placed here next to Peter. And Matthias, who was chosen to replace Judas, is absent. (The presence of the Apostle Paul hints that the icon shows something more than just a historical image.) The position of the figures symbolizes harmony, in which no apostle is greater than the other. The empty space in the center, between Peter and Paul, is the seat of the Lord Jesus Christ, who ascended into Heaven, but continues to be invisibly present in the Church, as He promised. At the bottom of the icon there is an image of the old king on a dark background. He is called "Cosmos," and represents this world that is "in darkness and the shadow of death," corrupted and fallen, but "welcoming" the apostles (in a sense that the world needs to hear their salvific preaching).
