A Strong Tower
11.30.2025
Despite the fact that the followers of Jesus were being arrested and persecuted, the moment the Holy Spirit descended upon them, they found strength and boldness they never had before. For the survival of the Word of God, and for the continuation of the gospel, they knew they had to preach in the name of Jesus. And that is what they did. The name of Jesus became their stronghold. It became the place they ran to for help, the place they found deliverance, the place where safety and power met together.
They gathered in a physical room, they prayed in a physical room, and the Holy Spirit filled that physical room. But the strong tower they received was spiritual. The strong tower was not the building but the presence of Jesus in their lives. The concept of a strong tower in Scripture represents the life of a believer. It represents safety, protection, joy, guidance, and the peace that comes from the Trinity dwelling in us and leading us.
Examples of strong tower imagery appear in Scripture. Psalm 61 verse 3 says, you have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. Proverbs 18 verse 10 says, the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe. The strong tower is expressed through the mouths of believers, the apostles, and those anointed by Christ. Their lives demonstrated the strength and refuge found in the name of Jesus.
One example is Peter. Peter was arrested for preaching the gospel. He knew King Herod intended to kill him, yet he slept peacefully the night before his ex*****on. His peace came from his faith, from his stronghold in God. He trusted that even if he died, he would have eternal peace in God’s kingdom. And in that moment, without him calling on God, an angel woke him up and led him out of prison. If the stronghold of God was not present, that miracle would not have happened. God did not allow Peter to be put to shame because he still had greater plans for him. Peter knew that God’s presence brings peace, joy, and safety, no matter what the earthly outcome may be. That is the strong tower.
Another example is Paul and Silas. They were arrested, beaten, and placed in prison for performing miracles. Yet their faith was not shaken. They prayed, they sang hymns, and they praised God inside the prison. They trusted in the strong tower of the Lord. Suddenly, an earthquake struck, the doors opened, the chains fell off, and they walked out freely. Even the soldier guarding them recognized the power of God, to the point that he surrendered to Christ, knowing it could cost him his life. He saw the strength of the strong tower for himself.
Another example is found in 1 Peter chapter 5 verse 7, which says, casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you. This means placing your fears, worries, and burdens on God. Standing steadfast in God’s presence is standing inside the strong tower. When you remain in him, he gives you peace, he helps you overcome temptations, and he protects you from the enemy. The apostle teaches that the strong tower of God gives rest, protection, and guidance through life and even through death.
Let us bow our heads and pray that God gives us the grace to remain in his strong tower, the grace to trust in his name, the grace not to depart from his presence, the grace to call upon him in every situation, and the grace to follow his will in all decisions of our lives. May God strengthen our faith, calm our fears, and keep us secure in his strong tower. Amen.
