pausing, this evening,
to think about how odd it is,
and how beautiful,
that out of all the vocations
and skillsets,
across all the cultures and ages,
that God chooses “shepherd” for those leading his Church.
what sort of daily tasks… 🐑
what sort of daily smells… 🐑
what sort of social isolation… 🐑
what sort of sunrises… 🐑
what sort of dangers… 🐑
what sort of surgeries… 🐑
what sort of tears… 🐑
what sort of songs… 🐑
what sort of character… 🐑
… might this job require?

both the English “pastor” and “pasture” are related to the Latin “pāscere”
: inflection of pāscō (“to feed, nourish, supply, maintain, support; to shepherd, drive to pasture, tend to as a pastor; to care for, cultivate, cherish”)
///
In Jeremiah, the Psalms, Ephesians, and more, God says he will give his people good gifts of shepherds.
If such a person is in your life,
take time to give God the gratitude and then tell them what they mean to you.
If you know nothing of a gentle and kind pastor, who cherishes you and longs for you to flourish, our hearts break for you and we’re sorry for all the ways mankind gets this wrong.

Tonight, we praise God for the pastors, the staff, and their families who serve at City Church.
Just like a sheep-herder, they are truly out-standing in their field 😂
