We’re gonna be stepping away from IG & FB for a season. Thanks for being so kind and curious, supportive and responsive on here. While things may wind down a little on socials, we’re brimming with activity in real life. We encourage you to drop by on a Sunday morning or email church staff if you’d like to connect. Have a blessed, beautiful season of Advent. 🌲🕯️✌️

Fall Checklist:
✅ Walk in the
✅ Find Christian community

Cleveland has a lot of beautiful places to see and interesting people to meet. With winter fast approaching, we’re reminded how the dark cold weather makes it harder to get vitamin D and connect socially - two things that scientists say are CRUCIAL to our health.

So go outside and enjoy the long shadows and colorful leaves. And let us know if we can connect you with a new friend group or a new church. There’s several great ones in this great town.

pausing, this evening,
to think about how odd it is,
and how beautiful,
that out of all the vocations
and skillsets,
across all the cultures and ages,
that God chooses “shepherd” for those leading his Church.

what sort of daily tasks… 🐑
what sort of daily smells… 🐑
what sort of social isolation… 🐑
what sort of sunrises… 🐑
what sort of dangers… 🐑
what sort of surgeries… 🐑
what sort of tears… 🐑
what sort of songs… 🐑
what sort of character… 🐑
… might this job require?

///

both the English “pastor” and “pasture” are related to the Latin “pāscere”
: inflection of pāscō (“to feed, nourish, supply, maintain, support; to shepherd, drive to pasture, tend to as a pastor; to care for, cultivate, cherish”)

///

In Jeremiah, the Psalms, Ephesians, and more, God says he will give his people good gifts of shepherds.

If such a person is in your life,
take time to give God the gratitude and then tell them what they mean to you.

If you know nothing of a gentle and kind pastor, who cherishes you and longs for you to flourish, our hearts break for you and we’re sorry for all the ways mankind gets this wrong.

///

Tonight, we praise God for the pastors, the staff, and their families who serve at City Church.

Just like a sheep-herder, they are truly out-standing in their field 😂

News. Jobs. Family. Expectations. The ways of this world… even our own desires (good and bad)… they press on us don’t they? Have you felt it this week?

Pressures from within and without.
Opinions from every angle.
Judgements from those who matter most to us, and those we don’t even know!

And some of these get stuck on repeat,
looping in our mind like a skipping record.

Who can say how they form us,
how they DE-FORM us?

Consider spending some time listening to the God, who calls himself the potter and us the clay, who knows our true purpose and invites us to trust him on this journey.

At City Church, we grow together.
We pursue individual formation within the rhythms and relationships of our church family. One of these rhythms is Sunday service at 10:30am.

The book of Ephesians says that the truth can be known,
in fact, the truth 𝕎𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕤 to be known.
And contrary to our deep beliefs, the truth is more beautiful and good for us than we could’ve ever imagined.
So good, that it sings through creation, healing and restoring and unifying what was hurt and destroyed and divorced.

This Sunday, all are invited to wonder about this truth, to hear about it and to even enjoy some of it’s singing through people who are experiencing this good news in their lives.

May the beauty of truth be sung through our hearts, homes, and hoods!

may we let our false thoughts of a bad God fall away. 🍁🍂

|||

“When you come to Christ for mercy and love and help in your anguish and perplexity and sinfulness, you are going with the flow of his own deepest wishes, not against them.”

///

“If you are part of Christ’s own body, your sins evoke his deepest heart, his compassion and pity. He takes ‘part with you’—that is, he’s on your side. He sides with you against your sin, not against you because of your sin. He hates sin. But he loves you. We understand this, says [Thomas] Goodwin, when we consider the hatred a father has against a terrible disease afflicting his child—the father hates the disease while loving the child. Indeed, at some level the presence of the disease draws out his to heart to his child all the more.”

///

“The sins of those who belong to God open the floodgates of his heart of compassion for us. The dam breaks. It is not our loveliness that wins his love. It is our unloveliness.”

City Church turns twelve this Sunday. It’s kinda wild to wrap our heads around.

Over the years, one hundred and fifty-one neighbors have asked our pastors to baptize them, displaying the inner change God has done outward to the public.

God has also used our church for counseling and healing,
education and learning,
justice and mercy,
flourishes of creativity and art,
unlikely friendships,
freshwater in west Africa,
church planting in Cleveland
(and around the world)
medical mission trips,
green space and neighborhood care, songwriting,
… the list could go on and on

This Sunday, we celebrate his work and love among us 🎂

Fall is here. Winter is coming.
And in Cleveland that can mean dark days and isolation for many of us. Now is a great time to link up in community, and set yourself on a path for growth and friendship.

God has made us in such a way that we become our truest and healthiest selves within the rhythms and relationships of his Church family. Dm for more details or drop by in this Sunday.
