Cleveland Heights Church

Cleveland Heights Church A Church located in Cleveland Heights, Ohio We feel called by God to spread the gospel primarily in our community, Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Jesus is our Lord.

The most important person is Jesus Christ, and we seek to imitate and obey him, to conduct ourselves in a way that attracts those who don’t know him, and builds unity, vitality, and service in those who do. The Bible reveals Jesus personality, and gives people access to his life. Jesus’ life heals and strengthens people profoundly. It prepares them to fulfill every dimension of their purpose. Alth

ough we don’t always get it right, we want to do whatever we can to share Jesus with our community. Accordingly, we participate in community fairs, parades, and other events. We also look for ways to serve in our community, and meet together throughout the week.

I am waiting on God Most High
Not on any human power
Trusting in my Master’s might
Through His Spirit He doth provide
Each provision as He deems best
For me, to trust Him is to be free

What a comfort to weigh all
On the Savior of the world!
Letting go and letting His-
Word obtain His perfect will
Blind to earth’s inconstant gleams
Now my heart shall find its rest in God alone

This song came to me in 2018 when my husband Ian first received a job opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia. We both felt like this was an answer to our prayers, as we had been praying for the country and it seemed like this was a way that the Lord might be sending him to go.

While we were waiting for all the fine details of the process to be realized, I felt so much anxiety consuming me. There were so many hoops to jump through and such little time. I felt like our future was so uncertain and wished I had a guarantee of what would happen.

Then the Lord spoke to me through a message I heard. Who was my true master? The Lord. All this time, I had felt like our future was dependent on people saying yes or no to allow Ian to go, when in reality, the weight rested on the shoulders of the Lord. He was the real one in control.

I realized I had been waiting on people and on the world, but the One I was really waiting upon was God. With that realization came freedom as I had never experienced before - I had a Master who was over every other master on the earth, and He knew what He was doing. I was given true comfort and inexplicable joy in that moment.

Verse 1:
How far reaching is His love
When in prayer I know He’s there
In His presence who can know
Just how much He will bestow

Chorus:
Lord, I want to know You more
All Your life You will outpour
Knowing You from day to day
Knowing You in every way

Verse 2:
I have many prayer requests
All of them I will express
But not often will I say
Lord, what’s on Your heart today

Verse 3:
Lord, I want to know Your heart
Now Your life You will impart
When as one we will become
Then the world will see the Son

Verse4:
Now our hearts become as one
In the presence of the Son
When before the throne of grace
Then we know His fond embrace

Verse 5:
I want Lord to know You more
Ever than I did before
Now my vision will become
To see God’s move in His Son

During the last semester of Sweet Savior bible school, I really wanted to participate. I decided to sign up for Hymns in History III.

I found the class very interesting and enjoyable. One of our classroom assignments was to write in a journal. Every week we looked at our journals, were introduced to different poets, and from our inspiration, we were to write a verse to our poem. I worked on the verses for the 9 weeks of classes with so much help from the brothers. Without James and Bob’s encouragement I don’t know if I could have done it.

My experience was that I wanted to know the Lord more. To have a desire of what was on His heart in my prayers. Through this thought the Son can be revealed more and more to those around us and to the world.

1) Oh, this cold dark heart
What a work of art
You are trying to make it

2) Desperately I try
To help you by and by
But it’s not going better

Pre-Chorus 1:
Who is the Author and Perfecter? Only You.
Who has the pow’r to change and make new? Only You.

Chorus:
Yet time and time again
Oh I try and try again
And I strive and strive within
To find nothing is working.
There’s a whisper in my ear,
“Oh, My child, have no fear.
Please just come abide in Me;
I’ll take care of everything.”

3) Disappointment and
More discouragement
Why can’t I learn this lesson?

4) Nothing that I do
Nothing that I say
Will change me anyway.

Pre-Chorus 2:
Who conquered death and rose victorious? Only You.
Who holds the pow’r to make us glorious? Only You.

Bridge:
Oh, I have nothing to give.
Without You I am nothing.
You have all I need
You are my everything.

This song came out of a time in my Christian life where I was frustrated with where I was at spiritually, and I just wanted to “be better” - better about praying, better about caring for saints, better about preaching the gospel, better about reading my Bible, etc. Yet no matter how eager or determined I was to change, I found myself falling short again and again and again. I was tired, defeated, and disappointed in myself. It was only then that the Lord gently pointed out that I was doing everything in my own strength. His sweet words to me are found in the chorus of this song: “Please just come abide in Me; I’ll take care of everything.”

He reminded me that only in Him is there a power that can change and transform me. He is the Author and Perfecter of my faith, not me. The key is to stop trying and to simply abide in the One in whom I find everything I need.

Verse 1:
Are you a traveler that's lost and weary,
Wandering on some dark, deserted road,
Seeking some rest, are you seeking some solace,
Seeking relief from your life's heavy load?

Chorus:
Come unto Jesus, all who are weary,
Come unto Jesus, and lean on His breast,
Unload your cares and lay down your burdens,
In Him you'll find boundless love and rest.

Verse 2:
Out in the world there is boundless oppression,
Cruel reproaches, and foul misery,
Have you been robbed, are you beaten and broken?
Jesus will find you, you're Healer He'll be.

Verse 3:
Aren't you tired of wasting your wages,
Spending your strength on what will pass away?
See how your soul still is searching for something,
Love that endures and a peace that remains.

Verse 4:
Are you an athlete, the racecourse you're running?
Struggling and striving, a crown you would win?
Without some food you will faint in a moment,
Eat heaven's Bread and you'll have life within.

Verse 5:
Are you a farmer that's seeking a harvest,
Bearing the yoke that is easy and light?
Friend, how you need some supply and refreshment!
Drink from the Fountain that cannot run dry!

Verse 6:
To you, dear friend, now this Jesus is calling,
Waiting and willing to show you His face;
He lived and died, all your sorrows He's taken,
Salvation's ready, come now find His grace.

T H E S T O R Y B E H I N D T H E S O N G
During one Sunday morning meeting in Cleveland Heights a while back, I recall looking out at the congregation. There were all kinds of people gathered together: some did not yet know Jesus personally and needed to take that step of faith with Him; some were faltering in their walk with the Lord; many others were faithfully following Jesus, serving the church and preaching the gospel. Though there were so many people in diverse situations with diverse needs, Jesus was what everyone needed. I remembered how I often found myself in various places in life over the years, but at every stage Jesus met every need with the riches of His grace and salvation.

I began to consider the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30: "28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (ASV). Some people were still wearily laboring on themselves and sin, and they needed to come to Jesus to receive His peace, rest, and salvation. Likewise, those who had been serving the Lord still had a need to come to the Lord to receive His rest, supply, and strength.

Over the next week or two, I composed the verses of this song that endeavored to call out to these people in different places in life to come to Jesus, to lay hold of His rest, peace, joy, and salvation. Praise the Lord for His faithful promise, that He will give us His rest when we come to Him! I hope that all those who will listen can relate to one of the verses and be encouraged to come to Jesus, for Him to give them His sweet and divine rest.

Verse 1:
Can I stay in You, like You stay in me, Lord?
Can I stay in You, like You stay in me?
Can I taste clear waters? Lie under this tree?
Can I trace these valleys? Ride Your raging seas?
In Christ alone, I am this free
In Christ alone, I am this free

Verse 2:
I want roots that hold, like arms, like Yours.
I want to bear Your fruit forevermore.
I want this dead branch to be my last.
Throw it in flames with my broken past.
In Christ alone, who grounded me
In Christ alone, who grounded me

Chorus:
I want to breathe You in, like oxygen.
Breathe out the good, the bad;
Just leave Your life in me.
I want to marvel at the setting sun.
Who will rise again as the Glorious One.
In Christ alone, it’s just begun
In Christ alone, it’s just begun

Verse 3:
When skies are grey, You are black and white.
And the Moon tells me who You are in the night.
A billion stars declare Your fame,
Oh, because You know their names.
In Christ alone, we shine as bright
In Christ alone, we shine as bright.

End:
Can I stay in You, like You stay in me, Lord?
Can I stay in You, like You stay in me?

I wrote Oxygen when I was at a place in my life where I didn’t want to be a passive believer anymore. I wanted to be an active participant and I wanted a deeper relationship with Him. I wanted the Lord to rid me of myself and I wanted Him to replace it with all He has to offer. I was beginning to realize that He was my life source and I wanted to feel what it was like to rely on Him alone.

I read Psalm 1 and imagined this tree planted by a stream. I wanted to be like that tree, strong, rooted and well nourished. I began to meditate more on scripture and recall passages I learned when I was young. Slowly the song became a mosaic of images I found in scripture that illustrated my desperate need for Christ.

P S A L M 1
1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Verse 1:
We are the Church of God
Sanctified in Christ
Called to be holy together
With those everywhere
Who call on the name
Of Jesus, their Lord and ours

Pre-chorus:
We were all baptized
By one Spirit
Into one body
By one faith

Chorus:
There is one body
There is one Spirit
There is one hope
To which we have been called
There is one Lord
There is one faith
There is one God
And Father of all

Verse 2:
In him we've been
Bought through the blood
The forgiveness of all sins
To bring all things
In earth and heav'n
Under Jesus Christ the head

Bridge:
Though one body, we are many parts, many parts in the body of Christ
Though one body, we are many parts, many parts

T H E S T O R Y B E H I N D T H E S O N G
The first time I truly understood that Christ-followers are "one body" was when I traveled with my college choir to South Korea and China. We performed Christian choral pieces in various churches and Christian universities. The members of the choir, young women who were primarily caucasian and only proficient in English, made deep spiritual connections with saints in South Korea and China, despite differences in culture, language, age, background, and gender.

Several years later, while my husband and I were active in worship at Cleveland Heights Church, I felt prompted to put my awe of the oneness of Christ's body into song. This song uses the words of Paul in Ephesians 4:4-5: "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Christ wants to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth (Ephesians 1:10). For me, it took meeting Christians overseas to understand what Paul wrote about the many parts of Christ's body (1 Corinthians 12) and to discover that it takes all different types of people to make the whole and complete and beautiful Body of Christ.
