Paris Reidhead said, “We’ve got to come back to the place where people meet God.” That quote is a call back to true encounter, not religious routine, and not something hidden away in a back room where nobody can see what God is doing. Too much of modern church has become a one-hour spiritual Photoshop session: clean up the image, adjust the lighting, hide the deadness, and send people home unchanged.

But in Scripture, people met God openly and were visibly changed. Moses met God at the burning bush and left with a commission. Jacob wrestled with God and walked away marked. Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up and cried, “Woe is me!” (Isaiah 6:5). Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus and became Paul the apostle. The woman with the issue of blood touched Jesus publicly and was healed. On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples were filled with the Holy Ghost in a way everyone could see and hear (Acts 2:1–4).

If we are embarrassed by visible transformation, altar calls, weeping, joy repentance, healing, deliverance, and the power of God touching people, then what are we even gathering for? Church must become the place where people meet the living God again.

Paris Reidhead (1919–1992) was an American missionary, preacher, and Bible teacher known for his urgent call to repentance, surrender, holiness, and authentic Christianity. He served as a missionary in Africa and became widely known for his sermon “Ten Shekels and a Shirt,” which challenged self-centered religion and called believers back to living for the glory of God.

When God Keeps You Waiting
Genesis 15:4-6; Hebrews 10:35-36; Micah 7:7

Ours is an impatient culture. We complain when lines are long at the grocery store; we fume when we get stuck at a red light; and we eat fast food even though we know it's not good for us. We just can't seem to wait. So when God says, "Wait!" or doesn't respond immediately, we often struggle to cope. And if the wait is especially long, we may be tempted to give up—assuming God no longer cares about our situation. Worse yet, we may even try to "help" God fulfil His promises.

When God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, he readily believed. Scripture records that "he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness" (Gen 15:6, NKJV). Many years later, however, when Sarah his wife was well past the age of childbearing, Abraham's faith faltered. He agreed to her shortsighted plan to "help" God by taking her servant girl, Hagar, as a wife. The end result was disastrous—not just for Abraham and Sarah, but also for Hagar, who was dragged into their impatience, and for Ishmael, Abraham's rejected son by the servant girl.

Granted, it takes real faith, courage, and patience to wait on God's promises—especially in difficult circumstances. But as the writer of Hebrews reminds us: “Do not, therefore, fling away your [fearless] confidence, for it has a glorious and great reward. For you have need of patient endurance [to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising], so that when you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised” (Heb 10:35-36, Amplified).

It is good to wait on God—for however long it takes. As Micah testified, "Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me" (Mic 7:7, NKJV). In our waiting, God is honored. After all, as C. S. Lewis reasoned, "I am sure that God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait."

Prayer: Jesus, I trust that you are working all things for my good—even when I must wait for Your promises to be fulfilled.

Songs in the Dark

Even in life’s hardest and most depressing seasons, God is with us and is listening to us.

One purpose of a song of lament, or lament psalm, is to be honest with God. It’s about expressing vulnerability by telling God exactly how we feel. We should never be afraid of God or how we speak to Him, because He is able to handle our deepest emotions and complaints. And lament psalms are our model in Scripture on how we can be honest with Him.

Psalm 42 is a lament psalm. It is a song about the hopelessness of the writer’s current condition. It speaks to deep sorrow and grief that is experienced in life. The writer of Psalm 42 does not know why he is depressed. He’s not sure why certain things are happening to him. And so he goes to God in prayer and song, expressing the deepest parts of his soul.

Another purpose of lament is to connect the hopelessness of life with the hope that God gives. Laments act as a bridge between our present situation and the promises we’re waiting on.

The writer of this Psalm speaks to his own soul and encourages himself to continue to hope in God. He knows that no season lasts forever, and there will come a time when joy returns to him.

We will all go through seasons of sadness and grief. And we will have Psalms as a guide. The first step is to come before God and honestly express yourself to Him. Tell Him exactly how you feel.

Next, remember the promises that He has given you in His Word. Recount how much He loves you and cares for you.

And lastly, encourage yourself to put your hope in God. Move towards songs of praise in spite of your current circumstances.

Encounter God’s Heart...
There Is No Other

Salvation comes from no other place than our Lord. Not only has he saved us from hell but also from the pressures of hell in this life. There is no other as mighty. No other who makes a way when there seems to be none. No counselor as aware of our hearts. No teacher as wise. No friend as faithful. No person in the world who turns the ashes of defeat into a beautiful breakthrough. No other who miraculously shifts mourning into joy.

Let’s praise him and put ourselves in remembrance of his goodness. Let’s stand in extravagant faith—faith that believes he is exactly who he says he is. Let’s praise him for answers to prayers we have yet to see with natural eyes. Let’s sing in advance of breakthrough. Let’s celebrate our Savior who continues to save and deliver, each and every day!

Lord, I delight myself in you. I release every care into your safe hands. You will bring me the breakthrough and wisdom I need. I align my thoughts to yours instead of allowing them to be consumed with angst. You are perfect in every way. Trustworthy. My faithful Savior, to whom I yield every fear and question without reservation.
