Revelation 5:1-5
“Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Imagine this scene.
The Almighty sitting on his throne holding a scroll containing the final destiny of all creation and redemption of all humanity. As a mighty angel shouts across the cosmos, demanding to know who has the power and authority to open this sacred scroll. As a suffocating silence falls. The text emphasizes that no one -not on earth or in heaven or anywhere- is worthy to open this scroll. That’s how powerful it is. The ENTIRE universe stands spiritually bankrupt as John bitterly weeps reflecting on the crushing weight of this silence; understanding that if the scroll remains sealed, evil goes unpunished, the brokenness of the world is never healed, and humanity remains forever unredeemed.
Then, the silence is shattered by the ultimate plot twist of history. An elder tells John to stop weeping because the Lion of Judah has conquered. The beauty of this moment lies in the profound paradox of how that victory was won. John, told to look for a fierce, predatory King—a Lion of roaring judgment—but when he turns, he sees a vulnerable Lamb, bearing the scars of ex*****on, standing alive.
Christ did not conquer through military violence, He conquered by allowing Himself to be slain out of love. Becoming the sacrificial offering. The very scars that signaled His defeat on earth are the credentials that make Him worthy to hold the future of the universe in His hands. The declaration that the ultimate power ruling the universe isn’t one of brutal force but rather self-giving, triumphant grace.
