Support with your donation, your feet--or both! Use the QR code to contribute and / or sign up to walk. CROP Hunger Walk is a community-wide, interfaith event sponsored by Church World Service (CWS) to raise money and awareness to end local and global hunger. Local Impact: Up to 25% of the money raised stays right in the host community to support local food pantries, soup kitchens, and feeding programs. Global Impact: The remaining 75% supports international development, clean water projects, sustainable agriculture, and disaster relief.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that faith is more than good intentions or the right words—it is revealed in how we respond to God. Like the son who first said “no” but later changed his heart and obeyed, we are never beyond the opportunity to turn back to the Lord. God’s mercy always leaves the door open for conversion and a new beginning. He does not ask us to be perfect, but to have hearts willing to repent, change, and follow Him. Each day gives us another opportunity to say “yes” to God—not only with our words, but through our choices, actions, and love for others.

Lord, soften our hearts, strengthen our faith, and help us live our “yes” to You each day. Amen.

Prayer for the 25th anniversary of 9/11

We come together with people all over the world to remember the day our world changed. We come together in faith, in hope, in God’s infinite love.

Gracious and Merciful God, we commend to your mercy and grace all who died in the 9/11 attacks and all who have died while laboring to end terrorism.

In New York City: 2,342 persons
In Arlington, Virginia: 184 persons
In Shanksville, Pennsylvania: 40 persons
411 New York City rescue workers that day, plus so many more from the aftereffects and exposure to the toxins they breathed in.
Thousands of military personnel and civilians in the following years of war

Over 70 countries lost loved ones that day: family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors, heroes. In the face of all this loss, we claim your grace, your faithfulness, and your power to bring good out of evil.

Compassionate One, it’s been twenty-five years, yet the harm continues. Comfort all who continue to mourn the loss of loved ones. Come with assurance and peace for all who remain traumatized, anxious, or fearful for the future. Come with protection and freedom for all who continue to live in the midst of hostility and oppression.

Bring wholeness and hope to every broken place- to broken bodies, broken hearts, and broken spirits. To broken relationships, broken systems, and broken faith.

Draw together leaders of every nation. Give them ears to hear your wisdom and the courage to respond. Inspire them to work together for peace, justice, and freedom. Inspire us, too.

Strengthen all who risk their lives to protect others. Guard and favor all who work to make your world a place of peace. Guard and guide us, too.

God of the Nations, hear our prayer for our enemies and for ourselves. Help us love and pray for those who profit from hate and destruction. Help us stop the injustice. We claim your abiding, your humility, and your strength as we strive to fulfill this call.

Save us from revenge, false teaching, and blind suspicion. Help us recognize our contributions to conflict. Help us understand the hurt that feeds the hate.

Change the hearts of all who seek their way by evil and violent means, by coercion and corruption and privilege, including our own. Create in us clean hearts that beat with your unconditional compassion.

Leave no one in the shadows of evil and death, O God. Fill us all with your light and make us all instruments of your peace.

Our world remains a dangerous place, O God, but with you there is hope. With you there is persevering and purpose. You are our Rock, our Shield, our Defender forever.

Wishing you all a very happy Labor Day. The expectation of this holiday is to take the day off, put our feet up and enjoy the last stretch of summer.

How many of you are actually able to take the time to reset and rest today?

We say we are going to relax, and then we answer a few emails. We clean the kitchen. We run to the grocery store. We start thinking about everything that needs to happen in September. Before we know it, our day off has turned into another day of checking things off a list.

Maybe this Labor Day, we can try something different.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” There is something wonderfully freeing about that idea. There is no mention of being productive, getting ahead or improving ourselves. It is simply an invitation to step outside and enjoy the world around us. That may be exactly what many of us need.

We spend so much of our lives rushing from one thing to the next. We wake up thinking about what needs to be done. We fall asleep thinking about what we forgot to do. Even when we are sitting still, our minds are often somewhere else.

Nature has a way of interrupting all of that.

Take a walk without worrying about how far you go. Sit outside with your morning coffee and actually taste it. Notice the trees moving in the breeze. Listen to the birds. Watch the clouds. Feel the sun on your face.

These are small things, but small things have a funny way of becoming the moments we remember.

Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” I love that thought because it reminds us that beauty is not always somewhere far away. We do not need a plane ticket, a perfect vacation or some dramatic change in our lives to feel peaceful.

Sometimes we just need to notice where we already are.

Labor Day, after all, was created to honor work. And maybe one of the best ways to honor our work is to allow ourselves to stop working for a little while.

Rest does not have to be earned by overworking. Emerson wrote, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” Whether we are watching a garden grow, leaves begin to turn or the light fade at the end of a summer evening, nature never seems to be in a hurry. Maybe we can learn something from her. So, this Labor Day, let a few things wait until tomorrow.

There will always be another email to answer and another errand to run. But there will never be another late-summer afternoon exactly like this one.

Labor Day is a day to remember the One who made us and who holds us in the palm of his hand. It is a day to pray for just and honest work by those who have jobs, employment for those in need of a job, and rest for all who are weary. Pray too, for law enforcement personnel, medical professionals, and anyone else who must work on this holiday.

O God, creator of the world,
of sun and moon and stars,
you chose to fashion us as your own, your handiwork of love.
Indeed, we are your hands’ own work, and yet into our hands
you give the care of every living thing.
In more ways than we can count, our work builds up—
or tears apart—what came as a gift from you.
Keep us faithful in preserving all you’ve given
lest we harm the smallest part of all you’ve made.
Give us good and honest work to do and rest at each day’s end.
Let a just and fair day’s wage be paid for a good day’s work well done.
Give us work that nurtures and sustains the ones who serve and those they serve. Let those who labor work in peace, in freedom, without fear.
Give those in need a job to do, and to the tired, well-earned rest.
Let all our toil and labor, Lord, give glory to your name. Amen.
