Forgiveness: the concept is easy. The application is hard. Even for well seasoned christians, forgiveness doesn't come easy. We know the Bible calls for it. We know God provides it to us but having forgiveness for those who have hurt us beyond measure can sometimes take a long time to give. We have a hard time giving what we want given so easily. Forgiveness is easily asked for and given with great difficulty. Often, we need to give when it hasn't been earned. That is the hardest of all. God easy provides it to us, even though we don't deserve it. In His grace and mercy, He gives forgiveness when we absolutely don't deserve it. Yet, we find it so hard to give forgiveness. How can we overcome this? A short time ago I would have said just being more like Christ would give us the ability to forgive but practice has shown that sometimes sheer will power and Christ's grace is all that gives us the ability to forgive those who have hurt us so deeply, so massively that without God, it is impossible. And it may not happen on day one, on day one hundred, on day 1000 - but all God asks is that we keep trying every day to give what has been given so freely to us. He understands our hurt. He understands our struggle. He understands our weakness and He is there every miniscule step of the way - giving us strength, perseverance and reminding us of His unwavering forgiveness so that we can give what is so hard for us to give but so easy for us to receive... forgiveness.
