Samuel UCC We are a Just Peace, Open and Affirming,
Still Speaking, Multicultural congregation in the
United

Samuel United Church of Christ is a welcoming, caring, community of faith. Gathered by grace, nourished by the Word, renewed by the Holy Spirit. So strengthened, we are called to share the Good News of God’s redeeming love with each other and the world. At Samuel Church, we believe life is better when it is lived in relationship – in relationship with God and with all God’s people. We don’t preten

d to have all the answers and we can’t offer you a simple list of spiritual do’s and don’t. What we can share, however, is an invitation to journey with us. We are children and youth, seniors and families, couples and singles, who care for and challenge one another to live out the Gospel message.

Samuel Movie Night – Nov 1 at 6pm
Join us Saturday night, November 1st at 6pm for our second installment of Samuel Movie Nights. We will be view the 2014 film “Cesar Chavez”, a biographic film of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. In 1973, while meeting in St. Louis, the United Church of Christ General Synod was moved by the plight of farm workers in California and their strike. The church chartered a plane and flew delegates to Coachella Valley to show their support. The UCC actually gets a quick mention in the film. If you haven’t heard the story of Cesar Chavez, it is a powerful reminder of how when people work together we have the ability to change the world.

The movie is P-13 and runs 90 minutes. We plan on starting the move at 6:15pm, so that we have time for discussion afterward. We'll furnish hot chocolate, coffee, and tea. Feel free to bring snacks to share or your dinner to eat – if you didn't’t get a chance to eat before. We will gather for a third Movie Night on November 22, and a date in December where we will share a family movie for all ages.

As I was reading about the Women's Out To Lunch event coming up, I thought, what about the guys? It's well-known that men have a more difficult time making time for friends, and as as a result, they are often less connected to their community. I would love the chance to periodically have guy-time with my friends at Samuel.

Join us for a fun, casual time with the guys. No agenda. No rules. Bring a friend.

Book Discussion Group Resumes - Our next book for discussion is Our Lady of the Lost and Found: A Novel of Mary, Faith, and Friendship by Diane Schoemperlen. Mary—yes, that Mary—needs a little R&R and visits an ordinary woman for a week of ordinary life. Funny, sad, profound, and wistful, the book raises questions about Mary and miracles in today’s Protestant Christianity. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, May 14, 1 p.m. It’s not necessary to read the book first—come and enjoy the conversation. Contact Marilyn Breitling (618-277-0540), for more information.
