Happy feast day of the of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

Who will we be?
⁣
It’s a question our parents pondered before we were born.
⁣
It’s a question we might have weighed on career day.
⁣
Who is God calling us to be?
⁣
Whether we are like St. John the Baptist, crying out in the desert with charismatic words, whether we are like St. Elizabeth, trusting and open enough to recognize the Messiah in Mary’s womb, whether we are like St. Zechariah, struggling with doubt but then finding renewed faith and joyfully praising the Lord, we have each been blessed with different experiences and different gifts.

Es una pregunta que nuestros padres se plantearon antes de que naciéramos.

Es una pregunta que tal vez consideramos en el día dedicado a hablar sobre las profesiones.

¿Quién nos llama Dios a ser?
⁣
Ya sea que seamos como San Juan Bautista, clamando en el desierto con palabras llenas de carisma; o como Santa Isabel, lo suficientemente confiados y abiertos para reconocer al Mesías en el vientre de María; o como San Zacarías, luchando contra la duda para luego hallar una fe renovada y alabar con alegría al Señor: cada uno de nosotros ha sido bendecido con experiencias y dones diferentes.

Father Gerald Joseph “Pete” Peterson, a Glenmary Home Missioner, died on May 13 in Cincinnati. He was 96 and in his 74th year of religious life.

Father Peterson, who is from Loretto, Ky., served as a vocations recruiter, missionary and pastor. In 1952, he was a member of the community’s second novitiate class. He earned a doctorate in divinity from Vanderbilt University.

He served in parishes and missions in parts of Appalachia and in areas of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. He was also a vocations recruiter, traveling to Nigeria to recruit new Glenmary Home Missioners. At age 59, he went to Mexico to learn Spanish, as Spanish-speaking immigrants had begun to show up in his rural mission parishes.

He is survived by his twin, Geraldine Peterson, members of his religious community and extended family.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 3 at Community of the Good Shepherd in Cincinnati.

Hoy inicia la Semana de la Libertad Religiosa y con ello te brindamos una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre temas de importancia para la libertad religiosa en el país y el extranjero.

En los últimos años, la USCCB ha expresado su preocupación por la violencia de motivación política. La polarización, que desde hace tiempo es objeto de comentarios por parte de los líderes religiosos, parece estar degenerando en un ciclo de ataques y represalias. Los esfuerzos por abordar el creciente rencor en la cultura política estadounidense no han logrado contrarrestar las fuerzas que incitan a las personas a cultivar identidades políticas y tribales definidas, en parte, por su odio hacia los demás. Algunos de los actos de violencia recientes han manifestado este tipo de odio. Otros parecen apuntar a una especie de nihilismo que se celebra en ciertos espacios en línea.

Las tendencias en el discurso político pueden cambiar de un año a otro. Sin embargo, la cultura y las estructuras que fomentan el discurso actual siguen vigentes. Por lo tanto, en 2026, el Comité por la Libertad Religiosa sigue preocupado por la violencia motivada por razones políticas y religiosas.
