So finally the rain stops and the water recedes. Then God does something very important. He makes a covenant (long term binding agreement with man) in which he says that he will not cover the earth with water again. It is the first of several covenants that he make with us as the people of God. It reminds us that God’s promise’s are lasting and binding. Which is a lot better than the promises that we often make to God. Today always be careful as to what you promise God.

So the next 40 days and nights the Ark spends on sea. Then the flood waters begin to subside. Noah sends out a raven first. The reason is that they are scavenger birds that will be able to see if there is anything yet suitable to eat. Apparently not so shortly after that he sends a dove who returns with an olive branch which is a sign that everything is good to go. But the most important thing that happens is that God makes a covenant with man that promises
he will never cover the earth with water again . More on covenant tomorrow.

So the ark is loaded with all the animals and people God has designated to be saved and then he closes the door. Once again the door of the ark was huge. I remember when seeing it you could have easily driven a Greyhound bus through it. So the comes 40 days and nights of rain. In the Bible the number 40 stands for a time of trial, or divine intervention, with intention to teach to or transform. Maybe this year set aside a time ( like maybe Lent) to reflect on some specific but simple things that you can do to make your Christian walk more powerful more intentional. Share if you are willing on our page to give others ideas. We are all in the this boat together. Be. Blessed today!!!

I learned something new about the flood. I have always thought that the people of Noah’s time had rarely if ever seen any significant rain. In reality what they may have seen was a watering of things primarily from underground wells or springs but not traditional rain that we think of that falls from the sky. So the people who witnessed the building of the Ark thought that Noah was crazy! Then the first rain drops fell. Our obedience and trust in God cause others to simply think why or how can they follow someone so completely? We do so because God says we’re to have faith substance of things believed and not seen. That’s why they are sometimes called leaps. Don’t wait till the rain starts get on board now.

Another word that came to mind about Noah is obedience. Scripture says that he built the ark just as God commanded him to. Now maybe it was simply the fact that Noah was a farmer and not a carpenter but I believe that it goes back to being the only righteous man of his time. I thought a lot about obedience and found personally that sometimes it can be very subjective. Sometimes I think that there is a better way or a quicker way to get a task done. But God calls us to do it his way and not ours because his way is lasting. We like to create “temporary” fixes because they make it easier on us. But sometimes the long way creates permanent solutions that God wants us to experience and live forever. Today on a scale of one to ten think about just how obedient that you are to God.

Today God gives Noah the instructions for building the ark. Several years ago we went to see the replica of the ark that is in Kentucky. I have to tell you it was something to see. It was so big that we had to stand almost 200 yards away just to fit it in the screen of the camera on our cell phone. God first gives Noah the exact dimensions for the length, width, and height of the ark. To give these sizes some context the ark would have barely fit inside the Rabun County High School football stadium if it was sitting on the field. Why were the dimensions so precise? It was because those dimensions would have provided the maximum stability and buoyancy for the cargo it would have to hold. In another little known fact modern shipbuilders use almost exactly the same ratios to build ships today. Just another reason why we should trust God because honestly he is just plain smarter than we are. Think about all the things today you can where God is just simply smarter than us.

It was so awesome to be back in worship with everyone today. I really have a hard time describing how much I appreciate all of you keeping me in your thoughts and prayers during my recent illness. God could not have blessed me with a more loving congregational family!!!

So next God decides to start over. But the question is with who. He searches and finds only one true candidate. The man’s name is Noah. He is a man described as a moral and exemplary man who walked closely with the Lord. So God speaks to Noah telling him of his plan to destroy all living things on the Earth. The question for us today is who do you think God would pick in today’s world? Now we know that because of God’s promise that we can be confident that he will not destroy all living things again. However it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to live in a way that is moral and exemplary before God. One day we will stand before God and still have to give an account for how we lived. So today think about what places in our lives could use a little/lot of improvement.

Chapter 6
Chapter 6 starts with putting age limits on people. It says that they shall live no longer than 120 years. To allow them to live longer would be to consider them divine and not of the flesh that they were created from. Also people were becoming increasingly evil and that every idea that occupied their minds was evil. The Lord even began to regret making humans at all. To see what his creation was becoming caused God to be heartbroken. Today when God looks down how do think he feels about his creation? What can we do as the body of Christ to reverse this evil that is in the world??
