A neat glimpse into the early years of Claxton First Church! A special thanks to Georgia on My Mind for sharing this wonderful piece of our church’s history!

Evans County, Claxton, around 1900…This early view shows the Methodist Church on Main Street, and the building was almost brand new when this photograph was taken.

The congregation had been organized in 1892 by twenty-five members of Brewton Church. Before they had a church of their own, they met for prayer meetings and Sunday school in a Masonic building. According to the South Georgia Methodist Conference history, theirs was the oldest organized congregation of any denomination in Claxton.

The first dedicated church building—the one seen here—was completed in 1899 during the pastorate of Rev. R. M. Booth. Rev. C. S. J. Strickland had served as the congregation’s first pastor.

This little wooden church did not remain for very long. In 1912, the congregation erected a new brick sanctuary under Rev. C. T. Clark. The church continued to grow and change through the decades, including additions in 1940 and 1954.

There’s also a little geographical twist to this photograph. Although we know Claxton today as the county seat of Evans County, Evans County did not exist when this picture was made. It was created in 1914 from portions of Bulloch and Tattnall counties. Claxton itself was a very young railroad town at the time, having developed after the railroad came through the area in the 1890s.

So this photograph captures more than an old church—it catches Claxton during its earliest years, when both the town and many of the institutions that would shape it were still taking root.

Sundays are for creativity and community!

The women of CFC along with a few friends spent a wonderful afternoon at Brookside Gifts in Hagan for a time of painting, laughter, and true fellowship.

It was so much more than just a craft day; it was a chance to share encouragement, lend a helping hand, and ensure everyone walked away with a masterpiece.

A huge thank you to Yolanda and Jamie for hosting us, and to every lady who spent their afternoon lifting each other up. Everyone left with a beautiful piece of art and a full heart.
