A former elementary school 70 miles from Portland, Oregon, Great Vow Zen Monastery was purchased by Zen Community of Oregon in 2002. It rests on 20 acres of land with meadows, woods, and a small stream. Our Zen Buddhist practice is a synthesis of Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions informed by the practice and study of our teachers, Chozen and Hogen Bays. At the heart of our training are monthly silent

meditation retreats ranging from 6-10 days called sesshin. We also offer a variety of workshops and classes ranging from contemplative arts to compassionate communication with the intention to broaden our expression of wisdom in everyday life. We hope that Great Vow can be a spiritual refuge and a vehicle to carry the life of the Dharma forward for many generations to come.

Seven sangha members took the precepts this month, Olivia received the first Five precepts and Julian, Brad, Ana, Lance, Maesie, and Margaret received the 16 precepts.
Here are their newly given dharma names:

Genkan (Julian)
Gen: Source Kan: Insight

Senkei (Brad)
Sen: River Kei: Star

Meisho (Ana)
Mei: Bright Sho: Creation

Kigen (Lance)
Ki:Joy Gen: Profound

Enku (Maesie)
En: Blazing Ku: Sky

Shokai (Margaret)
Sho: Blossom Kai: World

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Chan Retreat led by the fantastic Gou Gu.

It was wonderful to finally have Guo Gu visit Great Vow after two online visits. We met his sangha from Florida as well as his students from all over the country.
He help infused our Zen practice with his depth of Chinese Buddhist history, his embodiment practices, and his playful and insightful phrases like IAG, It's All Good.

May our paths cross again next year 🙏

Another Jukai!

On Monday the Clatskanie Rural Fire Department came out to do a training burn on the 100 year old unusable and very unsafe house (we couldn't even walk in without falling through the floors) --- on the new 20 acre addition to the monastery land.

It was an unexpectedly beautiful and eerie sight, and a bit sad, that a house that was built by hand and whose inner walls were made of thick planks turned into fire and smoke. The firefighters were super professional and kind people. They were very gald to be able to use the house for training some of their new volunteer firefighters.

Full priest ceremony for Kennyo!

Kennyo served the sangha of Great Vow for 10 years and this weekend marked the culmination of his five-year novice priest commitment. Kennyo is now being called to pursue a PhD in Relgious Studies.

Our sangha was able to share our gratitude for Kennyo's ability to make people feel heard, his love for practice, and his beautiful form in the zendo đź’›
