How to Help Someone Who Feels Helpless
Adapted from the JED Foundation

It is su***de prevention month!. This is a difficult topic to think and talk about, especially in the beloved community where we rely on the Lord to bring us out. And He will. However, the Lord most often works through people on this earth. SO this month we focus on how to help others who feel hopeless.

If someone you love has just experienced a significant loss or life change, they may experience temporary feelings of hopelessness as they grieve and adjust to a new normal. If those feelings stick around, happen for no apparent reason, or make it hard for them to do the things they normally like to do, they may need professional support to begin to feel better.

Check in with them gently. Ask questions in a way that lets your friend know you care. Be open to listening to them, and respect that there may be things they don’t feel comfortable sharing. You may want to know more, but prying may cause the person to withdraw and make sharing harder for them down the line.

Show empathy. Don’t try to fix their situation, make them see the bright side of things, or shame them for feeling hopeless. (“But you have so much going for you!”) Instead, start with listening and then let them know you have heard them and understand this is a hard time. You can even repeat back to them what you have heard so they know you are working to understand what they are going through.

Offer support. But offer it in ways that won’t harm or exhaust you. Support can range from just listening to more hands-on help like helping them find professional support.

Encourage them to seek professional help. There is a limit to what kinds of support friends can provide. Let your friend know a trained mental health professional, such as a school counselor or therapist, can provide help specific to their situation.

Share your own experiences. If you have struggled with hopelessness, sharing your experience and what brought you hope can make your friend feel less alone.

Keep inviting them to activities. Sometimes people who feel hopeless will withdraw from friends or activities they enjoy. Inviting them to spend time with you may help them feel less isolated and give them new positive experiences to look forward to.

Take it seriously if they mention self-injury or su***de. Do not keep it a secret, even if they ask you to. Tell a trusted adult and share these resources with them:

If you or they need help right now:
• Text HOME to 741-741 for a free, confidential conversation with a trained counselor any time of day.
• Text or call 988 or use the chat function at 988lifeline.org.
• If this is a medical emergency or there is immediate danger of harm, call 911 and explain that you need support for a mental health crisis.

We can all help prevent su***de. The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

God’s Word in 3 John 1-2 reads

Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.

Our soul is our mind( thoughts), emotions and will.

There are many sources of stress, anxiety, uncertainty, trauma that surrounds and challenges soul prosperity.

But there are also many resources available to us as well, beginning with self care and awareness.

As we examine our spirit selves before taking communion each month, we ought to examine our souls( thoughts, emotions and behaviors).

Be honest with yourself about how you are feeling.
Is there joy in your life, contentment, productivity, fellowship and community?

Are your thoughts pure and of good report or filled with fear and regret.

Examine your soul and seek support if needed.

If you or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, dial 988.

For immediate emergencies, call 911.

Protect Yourself
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” Romans 8:31

In these times, it may seem that the whole world is against us.
Floods, tornados, shootings, political discord, bank failures, personal and family discord, divorce and loss is all around us,all the time.
As a result mental/emotional pain is at an all time high. Depression, su***de, traumatic stress are being diagnosed across age, economic and even racial groups.
Though there are more and more treatments available, the best course is prevention.
*God has provided natural protectants ( weapons)for our health. Some of these are easily known and understood:
1.Eat well
2.Sleep well
3. Exercise.
*But God has provided so much more that we can use to fight for our mental health.
*One example is crochet/knitting!
Studies have shown that the repetitive action in crochet and knitting releases serotonin - A natural chemical anti-depressant. This is now being used as a therapeutic technique in counseling.
We may not be able to control the circumstances of the world, but we can use everything God has provided to protect our mental health!

Join the group. Sit, Stitch, and Pray!

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, dial 988.
For immediate emergencies dial 911.
