June 14, 1777: The Day America Chose Its Flag

Two hundred forty-nine years ago, a young nation fighting for independence adopted a new symbolโ€”the Stars and Stripes. Decades later, Baltimore would help cement that symbol's place in history when Mary Pickersgill stitched the giant flag that survived the British bombardment of Fort McHenry. From the Revolution to today, June 14 remains a celebration of the flag and the ideals it represents.

"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few." (Matthew 9:37)

When Jesus looked upon the crowds, He was moved with compassion. He saw people who were searching, struggling, and longing for hope. His response was not simply to feel for themโ€”it was to send disciples to serve them.

The same call echoes today. Christ invites each of us to be laborers in His harvest field: sharing His love, offering a helping hand, speaking words of encouragement, and bringing His presence to those in need.

As we reflect on this Gospel, let us pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life, and for the courage to answer God's call in our own lives.

Lord, send out laborers for Your harvest! ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Happy Flag Day! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Today we honor the American flag, a symbol of our nation's freedom, unity, and enduring hope.

As we celebrate Flag Day, let us give thanks for the blessings of liberty, remember with gratitude the men and women who have defended our freedoms, and pray for all who continue to serve our country. May we always use the gift of freedom to serve God, love our neighbors, and work for the common good.

God bless America! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Today the Church celebrates Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1944, Pope Pius XII instituted the universal feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be celebrated annually on August 22, and in 1969, Pope Paul VI moved the celebration to the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart.

As we honor the holy, most pure, and Immaculate Heart of Mary, try to ponder that which the Blessed Virgin Mary pondered during her life. Ponder the love she had for her Son. Ponder the mysteries contained within her heart.

TODAY IS THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SANCTIFICATION OF PRIESTS

Today, on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church invites us to pause and pray in a special way for the sanctification of priests.

Priests preach the Gospel, celebrate the Holy Mass, hear confessions, visit the sick, guide families, and quietly carry many spiritual and personal burdens.

Behind every visible ministry is a human heart that also needs grace, strength, wisdom, and prayers.

Today, let us remember all priests:
those who are joyful,
those who are tired,
those carrying hidden crosses,
those serving faithfully in silence,
and those in need of encouragement and renewal.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, sanctify Your priests. Strengthen them in holiness, protect them in trials, renew their hearts with zeal, and help them remain faithful witnesses of Your love. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, keep them close to Your Sacred Heart.

Amen.

Mention a priest in the comments and say a prayer for him today.

Be Prayerful. Be Inspired

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

St. John Paul II, a great devotee of the Sacred Heart, said, โ€œThis feast reminds us of the mystery of the love of God for the people of all times.โ€

In 1675, Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that He wanted the Feast of the Sacred Heart to be celebrated on the Friday after the Corpus Christi octave. In 1856, the Feast of the Sacred Heart became a universal feast.

โคโœ As we celebrate the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus this month, Fr. DeAscanis invites every household to consider Enthroning the Sacred Heart in your home. This beautiful devotion is more than placing a religious image on a wallโ€”it is a public declaration that Jesus is the King of your family, the center of your home, and the source of your faith and strength.

To help you begin, Father encourages you to use the booklet available at the link below, which provides everything you need to celebrate the Enthronement in your home.

Today the Church celebrates St. Barnabas. The apostle and missionary was among Christ's earliest followers and was responsible for welcoming St. Paul into the Church. Learn more at

What little we know about Saint Barnabas comes to us from Acts of the Apostles, where he plays a fairly big role in the expansion of the early Church. Closely associated with Saint Paul, he shared in several of Paulโ€™s trips and difficulties.

Today, pilgrims from our pastorate traveled to Baltimore to take part in the . The day started with Mass. Then Jesus and the faithful processed through the streets to the Washington Monument.

Father DeAscanis, carrying a monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament, blessed Baltimore City with the Blessed Sacrament from the top of the Washington Monument.
