Though Jesus was a devout Jew who practiced his faith,
he was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners—the religiously nonobservant.
Jesus criticizes the self-righteous and reminds us that
mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices.
God continues to be made known in those on the margins of society,
like Matthew the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman.
As we gather each Lord's day we receive the healing that makes us well
and sends us forth to be signs of God's mercy for the world.

LECTIONARY 10
Desperate Measures
You've likely heard the saying "Desperate times call for desperate measures." Today's gospel features a story within a story, both of women, both restored to life and community. And the actions—of the girl's father and the woman with the flow of blood—are equal parts desperation and faith.
A father approaches Jesus in his desperation and asks for the inconceivable—that Jesus would lay his hand on his dead daughter and bring her back to life. Our daily news from throughout the world is filled with images of parents taking drastic measures to save their children. Asking this rebellious rabbi to bring the daughter back to life is certainly taking a chance!
Before Jesus even reaches the daughter, he is interrupted by a woman whose desperation has been building for twelve years. Due to a medical condition, she has lived as an outcast. She spends her days plotting her movements so as not to "contaminate" others and is accustomed to being on the outside looking in. Imagine how lonely she is. Her desperation leaves her determined to move through the crowd just to touch the fringe of Jesus' garment. He responds to this act of faith by looking her in the eye and telling her exactly what an incredible act of faith this was.
In these desperate, faithful stories, the appeal for mercy is met with mercy. What would make us appeal for mercy? A medical diagnosis that leaves us determined to exhaust all treatment possibilities? Praying for the impossible at a loved one's deathbed? Hurtful circumstances that leave us feeling isolated? Jesus calls Matthew from his tax table, then gathers with him and others around a dinner table with words of mercy. Week after week, Jesus gathers us at his table, because he is desperate to share that same mercy with us.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them,
human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and honor you crown them.

You have made them rule over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet:

Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures,
today's second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize
in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith:
we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ
and with us always through the Holy Spirit.
We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament,
as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

HOLY TRINITY
Triune God, Triune Church
On this Trinity Sunday, we hear Jesus' final words to his disciples. They are words of sending, command, and blessing. They include the great promise, comfort, and empowerment: "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:20).
The rest of Jesus' message is all about what happens until the end of the age. In the meantime, the church is active in sharing the good news, baptizing, and teaching the way of Jesus. This is done at Jesus' command and under his authority with people of all nations. The word "nations" doesn't quite capture the breadth of what Jesus means. The actual term in Greek is more expansive, including all ethnicities and cultures. Instead of a blank, monochromatic sheet of paper, the church is a colorful patchwork quilt of people pieced together, stitched together, and united in the love of Christ.
Today we celebrate that we know God as Trinity. The Trinity serves as a model for the life of the church: God is not one-dimensional, but multifaceted. The Trinity is not monochromatic, but rather a swirling, colorful dance. There is no division in the Trinity, but an indwelling of the Spirit, the gentle authority of Christ, and the blessing of the Father.
In a world that is often polarized and divided, and in which marginalized groups face persecution and strife, we are called as followers of Christ to live beyond borders and division. The church is to be a gathering of peoples made up of every type of human distinction. By gathering all varieties of people into Christ, we live into the embodied reality of our triune God. May we be emboldened to do so, knowing that we are accompanied and empowered by our Savior "to the end of the age."

Today's festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost,
observed fifty days after Passover.
On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit
as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites.
In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit
poured out on disciples of all nations.
In John's gospel the risen Christ breathes
the Spirit on his followers on Easter evening.
In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body,
and at the Lord's table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world.

DAY OF PENTECOST
Spirit of Unexpected Peace
Jesus, crucified and risen Lord of mercy, had a mission for his disciples: share the forgiveness they received with all those longing to know God. He even had the promised gift of the Spirit to empower them. But first, he had to figure out how to get them out from behind locked doors. Jesus' disciples were afraid that the religious leaders would do to them what they did to Jesus. So they locked themselves away and hid.
You could picture Jesus standing outside the door of their room, calling: Come on out! It's okay! Don't worry! It's time to start sharing the good news! And the disciples would just say: No! We're too afraid to open the door!
Instead of getting them out from behind their locked door, Jesus comes on in. Instead of yelling through the door to stop being such cowards, Jesus slips past their fear and their locked up lives and brings them unexpected peace. His own Spirit of peace moves out of him as breath, as the wind of God that creates new things, and creates in them a new calming faith. Then the mission of mercy begins. This Spirit from Jesus is a pure gift that creates peace, and peace creates mission.
Fear often keeps us locked up, anxious, unable to live the life God has given us. Thankfully, Jesus knows the way past our locked doors and our fearful hiding. Instead of making us feel small for hiding when we are afraid, he breaks through whatever barriers we put up, gets right past our locked doors. Jesus' own Spirit comes to us through the word, through bread and wine, through silence, through the one next to us, slipping past whatever barriers we put up. The Spirit comes as a gift of peace, peace we can't create for ourselves, peace that is deeper than our own understanding of it, peace that creates new energy for mission.

Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35 (congregation reads boldface type)
Let God arise, and let God's enemies be scattered; let those who hate God flee.
As smoke is driven away, so you should drive them away;
as the wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; let them also be merry and joyful.
Sing to God, sing praises to God's name; exalt the one who rides the clouds;
I AM is that name, rejoice before God!
In your holy habitation, O God, you are a father to orphans, defender of widows;
you give the solitary a home and bring forth prisoners into freedom;
but the rebels shall live in desert places.
O God, when you went forth before your people, when you marched through the wilderness,
the earth quaked, and the skies poured down rain,
at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
You sent a bountiful rain, O God; you restored your inheritance when it languished.

Your people found their home in it;
in your goodness, O God, you have made provision for the poor.
Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; sing praises to the Lord.
You ride in the heavens, O God, in the ancient heavens;
you send forth your voice, your mighty voice.
Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel; whose strength is in the skies.
How wonderful you are in your holy places, O God of Israel,
giving strength and power to your people! Blessed be God!

In these days between Ascension and Pentecost,
we gather with the disciples in the upper room,
waiting for the Spirit to transform the church around the world.
In today's gospel Jesus prays for his followers and for their mission in his name.
Amid religious, social, and economic divisions,
we seek the unity that Jesus had with his Father.
Made one in baptism, we go forth to live our faith in the world,
eager for the unity that God intends for the whole human family.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
God Doesn't Do Magic
It happens in the movies all the time: just as we are made to believe that all hope is lost and evil will triumph, suddenly the hero discovers a mystical phrase that will give him supernatural strength to defeat the enemy. Or the heroine finds a charmed sword that gives her the power to do the same. Believing in movie magic can be a welcome respite from the grind of everyday life. Knowing an enchanted word that keeps us impervious to harm sounds incredible—who wouldn't want that? Those moments may work in the movies, but they don't happen in real life.
Don't confuse Jesus' words in today's gospel with a magic spell or incantation. As Jesus prays for his disciples, he knows the suffering they will soon endure because they have come to believe in him. There is no way to avert what they will undergo; each one of his disciples is headed toward a certain and painful death, just as Jesus is. Jesus knows these things cannot be prevented, but that isn't the point of his prayer.
Being in the world means bad things will happen to us. Crosses aren't special charms that keep evil away, and wearing one won't keep you from harm. Tragedies take place, people get sick, bullies victimize, the innocent get blamed. There are no magic words to prevent hardships or disasters. When Jesus prays for the Father to protect those who belong to him, he isn't asking God to keep those bad things from happening. The name of God was never intended to create force fields around us keeping bad things out. God and the one who comes in God's name make us one together with them. In this unity, life always triumphs in the end.
